Paramount will not be giving critics a screening before hand but they have 10 out of 11 positive reviews on rottentomatoes. Looks like it will be a fun one(but not for those of you that want some kind of earth shattering plot...Tim).

It's usually not a good sign when a studio doesn't do early screenings for critics to review. Makes you wonder who these people are on rottentomatoes that gave it good reviews

Hopefully it's entertaining and they can make a good franchise out of it. It looks ok in the trailers but you know how that goes.

Yeah, tons of potential in the movie when you make your hero (aka Duke) out to be an idiot. I won't mention which part of the trailer I'm talking about, but you should know what it is.

The only legit part of the entire thing I'm looking forward to is Snake Eyes and I'm petrified they screwed him up, too.

(What kind of movies don't screen for critics? Stuff the studio knows will be a hit like SAW or total crap they want audiences to pay for before they see how terribly bad it is. I'm going with the latter here...)

Paramount is just being safe. The critics totaly trashed Transformers 2 so they are not taking any chances. G.I. JOE reportedly cost $175 million. I wouldn't show the critics either(they don't need them). It's better to have the public let each other know from word of mouth whether they liked it or not which apparently happened with Transformers as it is the highest grossing movie this year.

Transformers: RotF also had a MASSIVE drop off from first week to second week box office tally. Down 61%, IIRC, because it was a crap movie. Harry Potter 6 had the same thing. Trek only dropped 40-ish. Last year's Iron Man went down in the 40's, too.

The lesson: if you make crap, you will probably get a big opening weekend and then self destruct. And GI Joe is going to be crap. No amount of Harry Knowles fanboy love is going to chance that.

You are discounting the fact that these huge grossers are still grossing more in their second weeks than other movies whether they have a 60% drop or not. Most people go the first week.

I don't think I'm discounting it as much as saying crap movies have no legs whatsoever. They make their money in week 1 and, by that time, word of mouth spreads that it's overlong (RotF) or nothing happens (Potter). A good, solid movie holds up over time. The Dark Knight last year, for example.

GI Joe will be a huge money maker, no doubt. But box office gross does not equal quality.

Don't forget, I'm one of the very few critics that loved "Ultraviolet".

You are right, though, the GI Joe movie does not interest me in the least. It looks stupid as hell to me, and with early reviews on RT, it usually depends on who directed it before you can trust anything up front. This is a movie you want to wait until Friday to see what "real" reviews come in.

Nevertheless, I doubt I'd even waste my time on rental for this one. I might catch it on cable in a couple years as "stand by" material, but I may need a few drinks belted down me. Besides, where's the GI Joe with the Kung-Fu Grip?

The trailer didn't impress me either. I think the whole super suit thing looked dumb but hopefully thats not the whole movie. There are so many characters it could be a cool diversion of a movie.

Tim, I like Ultraviolet too but cannot see what in it could possibly hold your attention. Maybe Milla ? lol.

Don't feel bad Tim, it's like when for some odd reason the good girl falls for the bad boy. You don't even want to know why, just accept it.
