View profile »My main argument is people who LOVE a movie but then go on to prove that they missed the point entirely. Two movies that have done this lately The Breakfast Club and (500) Days of Summer. Warning, spoilers aplenty!
After John Hughes died last week, people have been writing about how it touched their lives, with lines like, "I loved Ally Sheedy, her character really spoke to me" or "I was the Brain in high school." What drives me nuts about this is that misses the entire point of Breakfast Club. The letter to the principal said so..and they read the letter twice!! They said that everyone is in some way a basket case, a princess, a brain, a jock and a criminal. Labels are crap. And yet to this day people apply labels to themselves to describe how the film touched them. Obviously, they needed to be touched differently because they missed the point. I want to give them a little doll and ask, "Where did the film touch you, Janie?" anywhere other than heart and head is unacceptable.
Then there's (500) Days of Summer. Fantastic movie I loved it. But the comments about the last scene between Tom and Summer have me stumped. A lot of people really hated the ending. (again, more spoilers). People really wrote of Summer as a bitch who took her new relationship and stuck in Tom's face, when in fact it was the opposite. She found someone to truly love. What I love about the final bench scene is that I go into it on Tom's side: Summer's a cold, bitch that has no sense of commitment and in 90 seconds, she has me believing in true love and that everything is okay. It's good acting and GREAT writing. The final scene with Tom's new interest is wonderful. I know a lot of people thought the last line was gimmicky (and I won't reveal it here, even for those who don't mind spoilers) but isn't that how we all get past Summer?
The soapbox is open. Personal attacks are welcome. For the record, I need to be finishing some videos and I told Henning that I was over-worked for this week, but I had to get this out there.
