Kiosks to make up 30% of rental market by the end of 2010

Redbox and other DVD-kiosk chains have grown to 19% of the DVD rental market but are projected to comprise an impressive 30% by the end of 2010, according to an industry study released Tuesday.

NPD Group said the current market share of kiosk companies, which collectively form the controversial dollar-rentals portion of the DVD marketplace, compares with a 36% share for Netflix and other subscription services and a 45% piece of the rental market for Blockbuster and other traditional video stores.

Just a few years ago, DVD kiosks represented less than 2% of the rental market. Redbox, co-founded by McDonald's but now 100%-owned by Coinstar, changed all that after it began aggressively rolling out its network of rental kiosks in retail locations nationwide in 2005.

"Consumers are obviously responding positively to the perceived value of $1-per-day rentals," NPD analyst Russ Crupnick said. "And they appreciate the convenience offered by video rental kiosks."

$1 per day, even for newly-released titles, is great when compared to the awful fees charged by traditional stores. it also beats netflix for people like me because i'm usually too busy to make netflix worth the cost.

$1 per day is practically unbeatable and with the economy the way it is, that price is even more attractive.

Im a netflix guy myself, mostly cause im too lazy to go back the next day, but also because of netflix on the 360. Plus you can't get any old movies through the kiosk.

Yeah I love netflix. Plus I get a movie every day the mail comes because I watch every thing the day it comes. So I pay less than $1 a piece.

I recently restarted my subsription with zip.ca and for the most part, I am satisfied with the service. I still cannot figure out how a movie that is my #2 choice, that says it is ready to ship, doesn't ship and my #24 choice ships instead

I just got sick of adding another stop to an already hectic schedule...be it to Block Buster or a movie kiosk...I would much rather just grab the latest mystery title from the mailbox when I get home and pop it into the company outbound mail the next morning and wait for the nxt Hollyweird Blockbuster to grace me with it's presence
