This a LOUSY DEAL. I mean, the xbox 360 price has always been an awful deal for consumers since day one, but it's always been clouded by the higher-priced PS3, across the SKU board. Consumers loved the xbox 360 due to it's lower price (compared to the spoon-feed-all-features-for-one-high-price PS3) which gave them the OPTION to upgrade in the future (at a cost, of course... which adds up to a higher total than the PS3).

Now that BOTH ARE SELLING FOR $299, the consumers can easily see that this Xbox 360 Elite... is PREMIUM-PRICED with so-so features.
1) No Blu-ray player
2) No WI-FI support included
3) No chance of upgrading the 120gb hd to higher capacity
4) Network gameplay NOT FREE

All of which are INCLUDED on the PS3 slim. Granted xbox live has a larger online-based activity. Given the PS3's new retail price, that may just change this holiday season.

Microsoft MUST LOWER the Xbox 360 Elite's price to at least $250, if it wants to keep its momentum.

You are absolutely right. When you consider hardware the PS3 is superior. Much like the Wii is light years behind the XBOX and the PS3 and still charges $249.

Gaming consoles (much like disc formats) is all about content and in this category the XBOX has the Playstation 3 beat by many lengths.

This fact is very present when you look at sold games. XBOX 360 has had many titles breaking the 1 million sold mark in the US (NPD numbers.) Titles like Gears of War 1 and 2 plus Halo 3 comes to mind. PS3 often has a hard time doing that. Also, what normally happen to games released on both platforms is that they sell twice as many on XBOX compared to the PS3. This counts if you like multiplayer.

It also says a lot when one of the most popular games on the PS3 is platform game that has been made somewhat 3d like - Little Big Planet that is. This on hardware Sony claims is the most powerful on the planet.

Some Playstation 3 fans say that if you only wait then the good games will come. Well, my life is to short to still be waiting after 3 years on that must have game that take full advantage of the Playstation 3.

A good example is Gran Turismo 5. It looks to be an amazing game. However, 3 years in a specific release date has not been announced. In the meantime I have played countless (and I mean countless!) hours on Forza Motorsport 2 and Turn 10 will release the third installment this October and will probably be able to release 2 amazing racing games before Sony can release one. Oh, and don't mention Prologue. The lack of cars ( ex. no Porsche models) can hardly be considered a racing game. More like a $30 demo of the final Gran Turismo game.

Also, consider that XBOX will have "natal" something that actually looked very promising and new. Sony basically just copied the Wii when they showed off their new "sensor" toy.

So, again. The PS3 hardware looks good and is a great deal at $299. So, if you are a movie buff that plays a few games now and then buy the PS3. However, if you either play a lot of games or none at all. Buy a stand-alone player and a XBOX 360 if you are in the gamer category.

Not true,

ELITE:
UK - New price on Elite is £199.99 - down from £229.99. The PS3 costs £249.96 here.

Many other countries the new price is €249 - down from €299.

Plus, Europe got price cuts some months ago that did not effect the US market.

The funny thing is that the 360 does have Backwards compatibility. It's limited but still. If you want to play Halo, Halo 2, and such, you can.

As far as the wireless and free online gaming goes? Tough titty. Not everyone has a Wireless Router, not everyone wants to use one. There are people who don't want to drop 30-40 bucks for a Router for their PS3 just because they'd rather run a Cat-5 cable to it. As far as the 50 dollars a year for online... there are people who pay three times that for MMORPG games... And that only covers 1, One, Ein, Uno, Un, game. One freakin' game.

By the way... I own both systems and a Wii. I enjoy all three systems to they're fullest extent... well... except the Wii.

ahhh thats good to know.
oh and the main differences with the new slim ps3 is that you cant upgrade the Hard Drive, you cant stand it vertically and it has less ports to plug stuff in.
this is NOT an upgrade, its a chance for gamers with smaller wallets and perhaps already owning consoles to get the ps3 without breaking the bank
no love lost in terms of features, I'm quite tech savvy and have never used any of the ps3's features other than gaming, blu ray and one usb port to charge a controller.
everything else from my point of view has seemed a bit like overkill to be honest (has anyone REALLY added their photo collection to their ps3 yet?)

The 360 is certainly overpriced now. but only by about 30-40 pounds.

they'll probably just stick on a larger hard drive to the elite and itll still seem like its better value.

The new model requires a stand to do this safely.

However, it is possible to change the drive as it is with the XBOX 360 (It requires special tools or a special drive from MS)
