the asian martial-arts movies being released on blu-ray, including zhang yimou's "hero" and kitano's "zatoichi" don't offer the original chinese/japanese tracks in lossless. instead the awful english dubs are presented in DTS HD MA.

what's the point of even releasing asian movies if the dub is given preference?

Because Americans don't want to read when they go to the movies. I remember seeing Crouching Tiger in the theater and people leaving and complaining to the manager that they had to read and they should have had a sign up warning them.

Yes, warning people that they might have to read.

I personally dislike having to read a movie as well. It is distracting. That is why I watch American movies in their native soundtrack as opposed to the other choices available on disc. (although I DO prefer AOTC in every other language over the original.) Still..what Diisney has done is dumb.

I'm with Eddie on this one... Whenever possible I ALWAYS watch with Subtitles, or Closed-Captioning (TV shows etc), so as to get as much information as possible. Often an actor does not have clear pronunciations (Mark Wahlberg anyone?), or the audio is not always well recorded (or loud sound effects covering up words), plus with the CC you also receive information other than the spoken words (details about music, sound effects, etc).

And occasionally, you will "read" a line in a movie that is OMITTED from the "heard" audio... where it was edited out, but not on the Subtitles or CC! Usually this can happen with profanity, or sometimes material that is of a higher rating than what the film ended up receiving, etc.

An example of this... A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon (1988), which I have on LaserDisc. Late in the movie there is a seduction scene where Ann Magnuson (an older woman) abruptly tells River Phoenix: "I wanna F___ you " (after they had dinner and were talking, etc). Well, the audio drops out (you can see the moving lips of Ann), but the closed-captioning reveals the whole phrase.

I come across this more often than you might think. The point is, I prefer to understand the full audio, and just listening to it doesn't always do the job. (so I prefer hearing and reading!)

while i understand the reluctance to have words interfere with an image, at the same time, i don't want to prevent myself from enjoying other cultures.

i'm with joe 100%--i always have subtitles turned on, even when i'm watching a movie in a language that i understand. (Y)

I just watched "Rambo" tonight on Comcast HD cable. I could have used a subtitle track to understand Stallone.

Catching both the subtitles and the action is an acquired skill, at least in my experience. The more you do it, the more you train your eyes and brain to capture everything on screen.

People are fundamentally lazy and expect to be entertained. In their minds, "reading" is not entertaining. I gave up arguing with those morons a long time ago.
