Can anyone recommend a good starting place for an anime newbie? What I'm looking for is a movie to watch that might be a good introduction to the genre. I posted a thread some time ago about samurai anime but I don't think I want to start with that yet. Would Princess Mononoke be a good start? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Michael

Definitely. Almost anything done by Ghibli would be a great start.
Mononoke was one of the more mature themed movies they have done, but their movies are always enjoyable (Kiki's delivery service, Spirited Away).
If you're looking for something a little more edgier you may want to give Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust a shot as well.
Others to consider would be the Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop movie. They both have their own series but don't require prior viewing. The Escaflowne movie is pretty much a reinvention of the entire TV series. The Cowboy Bebop series itself is episodic in nature and the movie plays as one big episode.
