so ive just got a panasonic player and started off my collection with - total recall & knowing (don't mock, the mrs likes nic cage and it don't look that bad a movie!)

so what are the must own blu rays in your opinion. It is my intention to mainly get new movies in this format as i have been burnt in the past with old films issued on a new format.

i look forward to some honest suggestions

Animation wise, anything from Disney, Dreamworks, Pixar, etc.

Newer movies...hmmmm so many...

- Planet Earth if you haven't seen that in HD already.
- Iron Man, Dark Knight, Band of Brothers, Casino Royale, Coraline, I Am Legen, IRobot, Incredible Hulk (Ed Norton), Quantum of Solace, Transporter series looks good in HD, Tropic Thunder...just to name a few.

I know I'm forgetting some other great looking and sounding blurays but others here will chime in. Oh and if you can, by them used on sites like craigslist in your area. You will save TONS of money that way.

falcon - i pretty much own everything you suggest on either dvd or hd dvd, however i do not have any of the transporter series and i am tempted to get them so i may give them a go

bladerunner- the same applies to you apart from i don't have spirit which got quite bad reviews but again i am tempted with this one.

just ordered cliffhanger as its well cheap and i do like this film but for some reason have never got it .from what i read the transfer is quite good on this one (crosses fingers!)

hold up. are we talking film quality here or presentation? if we are talking quality of movie, you may want to rent the spirit before buying. some hate it some like it however the presentation is grade A..

and just because you own a movie on dvd or have seen it does not mean that you have really SEEN it if that makes any sense. so with that being said may I recommend these 3 titles for quality of movie AND presentation. just to get you started...

2001
the dark knight
wall-e

after you see these in hd it is my guess that cliffhanger isn't going to cut it even though it is a fine film.

I just picked up the Underworld Trilogy for short money. The first one looked significantly better then the dvd. I have not watched the other two as of yet. I've never seen them, so they will be like new movies for me. No True HD on these but they are still worth having.

I think Equilibrium is out on bd. I have it on an Japanese HDDVD (as: Rebellion) and it was quite good. I'm sure the bd will be as good or better.

**A must have for Halloween is Trick 'r Treat which was just released on bd. This movie is a real FUN ride.**

Coroline.

Pan's Labyrinth. (in 7.1 Spanish)

Stardust.

Out of the mainstream: The Fall (absolutely amazing imagery), Sukiyaki Western Django (a weird Japanese western, interesting imagery) and Immortal (an off the wall French sci-fi film).

Any restored Disney animation. (Whew)! God, I'm quardipppple dipping on these for my daughter. I bought her MANY of these on vhs when she was little (which she still has) and now on bd as she moves into her new house.

well i suppose a bad film that looks good is still a bad film in my book, so i am looking for great films that also happed to look good. An example of this is Tremors which i got on HD DVD and it looks damn fine. This also depends on what you class as a good film

As i have just got the player it is my intention to get a few films just to get me going without duplicating what i already have. My intention is to get all of the new releases on blu-ray from now on (eg-transformers 2,star trek etc etc). Its just that i have got the player and bugger all to watch onit if you know what i mean

HA, I just picked up Stardust on HD DVD for $5 at HMV Canada. They have a great sale on right now. 4 for $20! And specially marked titles are $4. The collection is up to 166!

There a a bunch of places around with great HDDVD bargins. I recently bought Troy for $3.99 new at f.y.e. I pretty much have everything I want on HDDVD other then the new zombie indi that's coming out at the end of the month. We'll see how that turns out.

Sawittree, DEFINITELY rent The Spirit before buying. I could not even tolerate this movie. Yes it looks good but man what an incredibly pointless movie.

StevePro, Equilibrium is available on bluray although at the moment I think it's in Canada only. Also it has a DTS HD audio track on it that is not mentioned anywhere on the cover. Nice secret bonus. If you want it, I can buy it and ship it to you. Just figure out how to send me $20 Can. Let me know.
