I hate Vista. With a passion. So it goes without saying that I was less than thrilled to downgrade my laptop, back to xp, when I bought it 2 months ago... vista-flooded.

Now that I've received my FREE Windows 7 upgrade, I was even LESSER thrilled to do a complete overhaul of my system, and install the sucker from scratch. Given that I have nothing important in my laptop, other than arcade games & unsent love letters to Rosamund Pike... I figured it's safe to install.

I know I'm gonna burn in hell when I say this but: Windows 7 is THE TRUE UPGRADE to Windows XP. I just hope I get a lobster dinner on my final meal... CIAO!

I've heard nothing but good things about Windows 7 so I'm curious to try it out also on my desktop. Only worry for me is will my current software (antivirus, Video authoring for home movies, etc) work with it?

If they do I'll try it out.

It will if you're upgrading from Vista, you're safe. If you're using XP, as most people are, you're out of luck. You have to reinstall everything. Or install Windows 7 on a separate hard disk or a separate partition or something.

Otherwise, you start from scratch and reinstall all your programs and customize them the way you remember them, if you can. What? You say you have about 800 separate programs on XP, all of them modified to your liking already? It'll only take you the next ten years to get everything back the way you want it with Windows 7.

Oh, and the dreaded Windows Registry is still there to continue gumming up the works. Apparently, the smartest and richest people on the planet, who work for Microsoft, still can't figure out how to make an operating system without the clumsy, ever-fragmented, ever-bloating Registry.

Yeah, 7 is a dream compared to Vista. It is stable and smoother so far than Vista ever was. They dumbied down Vista so far that it almost seems like Xp all over agian. So far all my drivers work without fail. No issues either with my HD software either. I might actually have a winner here. Still not sold just yet, but 7 is far superior to vista already. Still not confident enough to change the xp machines yet...

john I hear you about the registry. It does suck if your DLL or other program didn't register well. I am not planning to upgrade my XP. However, I will upgrade all my Vista machines. I will get my windows 7 next week.

I think I'm going to upgrade to windows 7 also. As long as it's not too expensive.

I've been using Windows 7 on my laptop for a few months now. I have a dual boot of XP and Win 7. Find myself using the Win 7 a whole lot more. I just hope it works with my new copy of Antivirus 2009. The only bug I have found thus far is my wireless connection has gotten lost a couple times and the only fix was to disconnect and reconnect(reboot didn't work on its own). Possibly 7 doesn't like to communicate with my DLINK router.

This is one area where early adoption scares. Let it "breathe" for awhile fellas. (ladies?) It will be there tomorrow. XP ain't broke. It is still the best born into a time when microsoft had its sheyot together a littlle bit tighter. Before "red rings' and economy collapse. Not saying seven is bad..it is promising.

It just needs a bit more work.

Well, if you have to re-install all your programs you could always change to a Mac

Seriously though I hear nothing but good about Windows 7 so it should be a worthy upgrade. But as you say, the foundation of the OS is still the same and this will not change unless they do what Apple did. Create a new OS from scratch and run emulation software for old programs until new versions have been created.

I'm probably going to end up using my girlfriends college Email Account to pick up Windows 7 Pro for 30 bucks.
