Sulu's ship was called the USS Excelsior in Star Trek 6, but it first appeared in Star Trek 3 under a different captain.

You're both right.

The Excelsior class debuted in ST III as the USS Excelsior.

Sulu's ship in ST VI, the USS Excelsior, was seen in ST VI. Technically, that ship on the disc is an Excelsior class ship. However, that shot is definitely not from ST III or ST VI. Neither of the Excelsior's were in a spacedock like that.

When was an Excelsior class vessel in an open spacedock in the movies?

Star Trek Generations, ST VII. The Enterprise-B was also an Excelsior class ship. Therefore, Eddie is right. Paramount got the right class ship on the disc, but failed to get a shot from ST VI

Jason, uber-Trek nerd

Jason's right. That shot is NOT in "Star Trek VI". Go watch III, VI, and "Generations" again, and you'll see that that shot is from "Generations".

On top of that...the ship is BLOODY UPSIDE DOWN. (N)

The Enterprise-B in "Generations":
