Quote:Think about it, it's easy to get a few guys together and bang out a 3-minute tune on a few instruments.

Still ain't nothing as good as a kick-ass punk rock track.

Quote:Tim, I see many of your points as valid. However, NO, it is not easy to create a 3 minute tune that people will still consider a good one decades after. Also consider that Michael Jacksons albums holds various records that many believe will never be broken.

Well, that doesn't always prove greatness just because you can sell more records than anyone else. If you study classic conductors as I did as a child, you'll find many of them were the underdogs of their time. Only in the 19th Century did their popularity aspire past their competition. There are many cases of Art where you can make the same argument. Many artists of our time were just average joe artists when they were living, but when dead they become legendary.

And yes, 3-minute songs are pretty easy. Take Tom Petty for example - the guy is the king of three chords, a simple back-beat and lyrics that get stuck in your head for days. There are literally 100's of artists that follow this same pop/rock, radio friendly formula. Making the songs are easy, getting the management and marketing to work is the hard part.

Quote:Even Michael Jackson had to realize that making every type of music is hard on his last album.

Well, what's hard for any artist is making the next album different, or a little more unique than the last. Then there are bands like AC/DC that just don't care.

Henning,

Tim has a point. Any dude can self-train and create a three-man band these days (just play a few chords). Not any dude can compose an opera for 300 musicians and 75 singers. We're not even debating the quality of the music--just basic technical competence.

But technical competence is neither a guarantee of quality (Spielberg) nor a necessary component of quality.

Yanni is extremely technically polished.

I'll take Lawnmower Deth instead.

chris,

i wasn't discussing about quality (or even quantity). .!..

Tim, you're comparing MJ to Adolf Hitler? Come on man. One word...HOLOCAUST. If you want to compare someone ot Hitler I would say George W Bush is more in the same realm.

Moving along...

Didn't MJ win the Artist of the Century award or something like that? Whether you like him or not you have to admit he was talented, he was a great showman and a very good dancer. Some people that danced professionally all their life couldn't dance as good and he had no training.

I personally don't care for Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath or any of that other crap but some of them did have some talent and put on quite a show (Ozzy especially) but still I wouldn't call someone a "follower" because they liked his music. lol

Regardless of your tastes, or anyone else for that matter, it's easy to see talent in a musician whether it's rock music, country, hip hop, jazz, classical, reggae, whatever.

X-ray Spex!? They are a silly, fun, little punk rock band. I downloaded them from the Zune marketplace. I'll say one thing for punk rockers, at least you can tell they're having fun.

Come the F on dude! It's a freaking exaggerated example of making decisions based on a good moral values. If you were actually reading into it, you'd see the ironic sarcasm. It was not meant as a comparison of Hitler to MJ, it's a simple examination of why you would not support a person that does not hold the same values as your own.
