I've said this before, but, I'm pretty satisfied with standard DVDs right now. I've got a fairly large collection that I don't relish replacing, even if it's just the "big movies". Maybe if Super-Def becomes a reality in 2020, I'll start replacing some of my standard DVDs. After all, 32 million pixels that you can't distinguish from one another, is hard to argue with!
However, I predict that short of Sony forcing us all to switch to Blu Ray and getting rid of it, standard DVDs will still be around and being produced. By then, my collection could be 1,600 DVDs or so!

Did you see the part about hidef audio though?
Super High Definition Audio
HDTV uses the 5.1 5-speaker format for audio. The super HDTV uses a newly-developed 22.1 standard of 22 speakers segregated in 9 speakers above ear level, 10 at ear level, and 3 low frequency speaker groups below ear level. When used in combination with the ultra-dense video of super high definition TV, the sense of reality is so intense that some people watching the demonstration experienced symptoms resembling motion sickness.
First of all...22 speakers?? REALLY?? Where are people supposed to put all these speakers? Talk about wrecking a living room. Second issue is the .1 So you have 22 speakers and only 1 sub? WHAH?
People come into my place and usually they ask me sarcastically if I have enough speakers. If you have a dedicated theatre room than ok fine but most people use their living rooms. Ah well, bring on the improved video I say.

Oh for the day when I will be able to spend even $100 without having to worry if I'll be able to cover all of my bills.
Falcon01,
22 speakers? Are you freaking kidding me? First off, I spent nearly $1,500 on my main and center channel speakers ALONE!! And that's just 3 speakers! I'd have to take out a mortgage on 22 speakers. I think I agree with Falcon01 too about placement. Unless there's some new speaker technology that allows you to have "big boom" and mids from tiny speakers, then I don't know how you'd accomplish 22.1 surround.
Wolvinator,
I think my 51" Sony WS is only capable of 1080i. I don't think it's able to display 1080p. My HDDVDs look pretty nice, but, honestly, I can't see that big of a difference compared to standard DVDs and I also know that I'm not getting the full resolution that my TV is capable of, because of the Component connection.
My main argument is (besides the fact that I don't have the money), the prices of Blu Ray discs. I don't have that much money to spend for Christmas this year, but, I guarantee you I'll be buying a few standard DVDs at the Walmart's "Black Friday" sale, and more than likely they'll be significantly cheaper than Blu Ray discs.
Bladerunner,
I think you'd be able to see the difference between HD and SuperDef on a 50" or larger TV. I've watched HDDVDs and Blu Ray movies on a large screen and noticed pixels in some scenes. What will be cool is to be able to see the difference side by side!

View profile »I would hope that a 4k-8k image on a 50" screen would look a gazillion times sharper than 1080, but just like a good upconverted sd compared to bd..I don't think that will be the case. sure it will look better, but not even 2 times better let alone a gazillion times better. and 22.1 audio? just typing that feels silly. lol!
unless they figure out how to transmit audio without speakers...of which I read an article a long time ago about that. (cant remember what it said).
I personally would like these guys to focus their energy on eliminating wires, cables, interconnects, etc. a wireless system would be friggin awesome.
