From CNN today:

"Survey: 'Bullitt' zooms to top list of greatest car chases on film; 'Fast and Furious' takes tenth.
(July 13, 2005; Posted: 3:43 p.m. EDT (1943 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Steve McQueen's car chase scene in the 1968 movie "Bullitt" still ranks as the most popular car chase scene in Hollywood history, according to a survey.

The detective movie, which featured McQueen driving a Ford Mustang in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco, captured 40 percent of the votes in the survey. The email survey was conducted by Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures collectible cars, and had nearly 2,000 respondents.

"Bullitt" beat out its nearest rival, the 2000 remake of the movie"Gone in 60 Seconds," by almost a five to one margin.

The action comedies "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Blues Brothers" took the third and fourth spots.

Rounding out the list, the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds" finished fifth, followed by "The French Connection", "Ronin", "Vanishing Point", the recent remake of "The Italian Job" and "The Fast and Furious" which claimed the tenth spot.

Those films that just missed the cut included the "The Bourne Supremacy," the Ducati motorcycle scene in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Days of Thunder" featuring Tom Cruise."

"I can't count the "Matrix Reloaded" chase because it was computer generated." - Johnson316.

It doesn't matter whether or not it was computer-generated, it was based on the merit of the chase in the film. If you went by your rationale, then you would have to go on to argue that all of the others on the survey would have to be seperated from one another on the basis of advancements in filmmaking technology. "Bullitt" is my favorite car chase sequence though.

"Bullitt" is still the best. I can't count the "Matrix Reloaded" chase because it was computer generated. "Italian Job" and any the chases from the "Bourne" movies were all really good, but "Bullitt" is still the gold standard of car chases. And the "French Connection" chase is a close second.

I just watched the "Bullitt" car chase for the first time. I liked it a lot! It's an awesome chase sequence, especially if you're any kind of 'Stang fan. However, maybe this has more to do with growing up after the era in which it was filmed, but I don't think I'd put it at number one. Horrible sounde effects, and the main "bad guy" being chased looked like a 1960's accountant, rather than some accomplished villainous driver. I obviously haven't watched the whole film, I just downloaded the chase sequence. Maybe watching the whole film would give me a different perspective on the sequence, but, I doubt it. As I mentioned, it's really cool, but not number one in my book.

I don't know that I've seen any chase sequence in a movie, to date, that has REALLY blown me away. I really liked "Ronin"'s sequence, but still nothing spectacular. I think I'm with Eddie on this one however. If there is one has come close to blowing me away, it was the "Bourne Supremacy" sequence. Movies like "The Matrix", "Gone In 60 Seconds", or "The Italian Job" were all excellent, and very cool, but just not up to the level of intensity that "The Bourne Supremacy" had.

I'm completely amazed that "The Transporter" hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. Even though, the only real redeeming quality of that film is it's chase sequences, what chase sequences they were! "The Transporter" would probably come in 3rd on my list. In face, I think I'd rate them as follows:

1. Bourne Supremacy
2. Ronin
3. The Transporter
4. The Italian Job
5. The Matrix
6. The Fast & The Furious
7. Gone In 60 Seconds (remake)
8. Bullitt
9. Smokey & The Bandit movies
10. The Dukes Of Hazzard TV show chases
