"The Last Temptation of Monty"
First and foremost, I am NOT a Spike Lee fan. Malcolm X was pretty good, Summer of Sam was average and I haven't seen "Do The Right Thing" but other than that I find Spike Lee's work to be boring and redundant. I rented 25th Hour only because Edward Norton and Brian Cox were in it, and I wasn't expecting much. Needless to say, I was BLOWN AWAY. This is a very big departure from most of Lee's work. Most of his films are based in Harlem or the inner city/suburbs and the characters are usually gang members, etc. "25th Hour" is totally different, as it chronicles the last day of freedom for Monty Brogan, a white drug dealer on his way to prison. He reflects on past decisions, visits his father and old friends, wonders who sold him out and tries to right the wrongs of his bad choices. The characters, played by an all-star cast, are very different in personality. Philip Seymour Hoffman is a sensitive loner, Anna Paquin is a confused, whiny school student, Barry Pepper is arrogant and cocky but a true friend to Monty, etc. The scene in which Monty yells at the mirror that says "fu*k you" was one of the greatest things I've seen in a movie. If Spike Lee continues on this path, he may break out of the type-cast mold he has put himself in. ANyway, a great flick that I would reccomend to all. I have added it to my collection, and I advise you all to do the same.

See, I told ya so.

Actually, TGP, I think you said it better than I did. I'm glad you liked the film.

I think this is one of Spike Lee's best. Like TGP, I was also happy to see him accomplish something that was a far departure from his usual "pitty the brother" routine. The scene facing the mirror was very powerful and somewhat shocking for those who are "politically corret" in nature. Norton had done similar scenes in "American History X", but I have to admit, he is very good at that type of role. Overall, it's a very powerful film.

8/10

Just to echo everyone's comments.

I've had this DVD for more than a year and there hasn't been a time when I haven't been moved after watching it.

As far as the DVD goes, I loved both commentaries! Spike Lee is a true real life character.
