So...this is basically the initial DVD release with a second disc of two extras and the edited version of the feature film?

Hmm...love the movie, but it looks like the well's going dry...

Sean (that would be your triple-dipper on the ole Apollo 13...) ;)

I don't understand what the difference is between the theatrical version and the IMAX version of the film... :(

The IMAX version is shorter than the 1995 cut because IMAX projectors can only run movies of a certain length. Also, the aspect ratio was changed in order to fill the IMAX screen, which is more square than a conventional theatre screen.

Ah. Now it makes sense as to why the IMAX version would be included. Thanks. :)

wait... why would we want the imax film? I'm assuming its anamorphic but I don't quite understand the purpose of including a film that's shorter than the theatrical run and with simply slightly more information at the top and bottom (and perhaps at the sides) of the frame. Just seems like a worthless bonus feature to me

you know, instead of blowing into every thread writing, "i don't understand...therefore, this sucks", perhaps you could do some research before you proclaim that what you didn't bother to learn about has to suck just because you don't understand it.

I was actually thinking about this too.

I came upon the conclusion that since this is the "Anniversary Edition" of the movie, it makes sense to give the fans as many versions as conveniently available. A lot like Anchor Bay did with the 4-disc "Ultimate Edition" of Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" (3 versions, including what you would probably consider a "worthless" 118 European cut of the film).

Not to mention, it gives people like me the chance to see the IMAX version of the film. I'm curious as to what and how much was cut out.

Also, I think that the IMAX version can come in handy for people who may not have the time to watch the "1995 cut", as Mr. Feng called it. For example, if one wants to watch the film, but have to get up early the next morning for work or class or whatnot, one can watch the shorter version. 8)

It's possible that the shorter cut may be better than the 1995 cut. I'm also curious to see how drastic the aspect ratio changes are.

so, there's not going to be DTS on the anniversary edition? Seems like that would be a step backwards to me

The IMAX version has a DTS track, but not the original theatrical release.

Eddie,

Mighta missed this in the review, but... what's the verdict on the IMAX cut? Better than the original?

Sean (original or bbq...that's the question...) ;)

Personally, I prefer the Extra Crispy. ;)

Sean,

Sorry, but I was a bit rushed when I wrote the review. The IMAX version cuts out too many grace notes that made the original edit so good. I was interested in seeing if a shorter running time would improve the movie, but they cut out too many goodies.

Tim,
I'm still waiting for the half-caff, skinny, mocha, latte edition! Starbucks, IMAX, and rockets... That'd blow your socks off!

Eddie,
I always felt this movie ran at a decent pace to begin with. A little slower getting going, but the tension built and kept you right in there with it.

As for the IMAX cut, this is why I felt this edition would basically be a waste: A couple of new extras and a butchered version of the film. The only saving grace of this set would be the dts track, but that's on the chopped version, so I think I'll just stick with my original copy. Already sounds pretty great to begin with!

Sean ('course these old ears are gettin' hard o' hearin'...):)
