god this has to be the worst review I have ever read on this site. I love how it starts by mentioning the new trend that tv shows are being rushed into movies like transformers and the simpsons when this movie was in theatres BEFORE THEM! Unless that cybernetic ghost of christmas past from the future thing got wind of the success, this show was first so couldnt foresee the follow up success other films would have. Also I love how a big complaint was how it was just like the tv show. Yeah I guess I would love to go to the movies and see somethign completely different, but if I did that it would be called something else as well and aqua teen movie wouldnt exist. Again worst review ever, when a big gripe is that the movie is like the show, you can tell the review isnt a big fan of the series, as they mentioned when calling it a mediocre cable tv show. The movie and the dvd arent trying to garner this new buzz but to appease the fans they already have. Why would you even bother to review the film if you dont like the show and dont get that comedy? Its weird when i look up mission impossible reviews you dont see comments like the second movie was too much like the first movie with the same characters and concepts...

Well there goes my trust in any of the reviews on this site.

The reviewer says it's a lousy movie based on a lousy TV show, and you lose trust in the whole site? Kind of overreacting there, aren't you, John?

And Tyler learns (though I'm sure he already knows) that hell hath no fury as that of a cult movie lover scorned.

puccio,

I wouldnt say its over reacting becouse now there has to be in some semblance more doubt in everything to me. If say for instance somebody who hates Sci Fi is trying to review a sci fi movie it would have a bias that would come out in the end, Basicly that anybody reviews things seems foolish, If you hated something to begin with. I wouldnt want a person who knows every action movie to disect the muppets in the same fashion becouse its not their specialty, they are a weak source to inform people upon such matters. Oh and when a review gets mentioned griped about events that happen after the movie also seem illogical. Also you cant really in good practice complain about how a movie you think is bad falls into people trying to rush it out from TV to Big screen adaptations when the film was released before the movies mentioned (simpsons and transformers)

It is very clear from the review how little the style of humor that is typically displayed during Adult Swim is the reviewer's particular cup of tea. I can find no fault in that, but I would like to point out that the Adult Swim block of programming has been very successful, especially on DVD. This show in particular has done very well. This audience isn't relegated to the stoner crowd, though I'm sure their numbers are in fair supply.

I can understand why many won't like this film, or the show that is its source. There is almost no plot development, zero character growth, and logic never even begins to make an appearance. The humor is almost always based on how these two dimensional characters react to the most unbelievably absurd situations. While you might not predict exactly what they'll say or how they'll react, it never seems shocking once it is witnessed.

Having said that, this show almost never disappoints me, and I found the movie to be just as enjoyable as the best episodes. I'll certainly be adding this one to my collection.

I'd like to mention a few things. The opening credit sequence was intentionally worse than the television opening, and that joke brought quite a few laughs in the theater during the viewing I attended. Also, from what I've read the deleted movie is very much a different film with many different jokes and not simply an earlier cut of the same screenplay. I'd wager that with the reviewer's lack of interest in the film he did not make it far into the rough cut before flailing for the stop button on his remote.

Obviously, we are not going to assign reviews only to writers who like the movies in question or to those who "get it" regarding cult hits. If you just want to read a bunch of fanboys oohing and aahing over every pop culture offering that is slopped into the communal trough, there are plenty of sites for that.

Oooohhh and here come's the third act's big reveal. Dah-Dah, where the much maligned reviewer Tyler reveals that he is in fact a big fan of Adult Swim! Shock and horror! It's just that I am able to take a realistic and critical view of those shows.
I actually own every season of "ATHF", "Sealab", "Harvey Birdman", "Space Ghost", etc. In fact the only Adult Swim DVDs I haven't purchased are "The Venture Brothers" and "Home Movies." I think Mingus Dew is one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life, the Mooninites are nothing short of brilliant and Robot Chicken is almost, almost as funny as Twisted Toyfare Theater. In fact if anyone had bothered to check I gave the adult swim program "Tom Goes to the Mayor" a 9/10.
So yes I do get the humor of Adult Swim, the problem is "ATHF" is far from a great show, its jokes are more miss than hit with most episodes barley even trying to do more than be weird and non sequitur for the sole sake of being odd and the movie is a showcase of that. The best parts of both the show and movie are the Mooninites and the Spacekataz aliens, the master shake is mean and Meatwad is dumb humor is overdone and hard to find funny the hundredth time through.
As far as the "deleted movie" goes, all the best parts of it are included, with finished art in the deleted scenes making the 80 minutes I spent watching the "deleted movie" in its entirety a complete and utter waste of my time. And I never once said anything about the ATHF movie having anything to do with the "Transformers" or "Simpsons" movies, except to give an example of how those films not only ushered in the upcoming "Tundercats", and "He-Man" movie and how they got it right (Transformers, eh not so much) by keeping their story centered around the TV show while still attempting to make use of their new cinematic advantages. Believe me, I wanted to like the "ATHF" movie! I even had a group of friends who are fans of the show over to watch it and for the few that managed to stay awake the consensus was, "Meh, could have been a lot better."
Also if this is the worst review you've ever read on the site than you must not have read any of mine before this, glad I could help you out! And I'm done, now I'm going to go make "Strongbad" fans cry until their keyboards short circuit.
P.S. It's ok for people to not like things you like, really it is! Watch, "I hate Family Guy with a burning passion". See, it's OK!

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not Strongbad!!!!

I have a nearly opposite reaction to Meatwad, Master Shake and Carl than what you've described. The more I've seen of them, the funnier I find them. It's almost the same thing I experience when watching "The Big Lebowski". The episodes get funnier every time I see them, though it never compares to the flat out brilliance of Lebowski.

How can you purchase all that Adult Swim and have avoided the "Venture Bros"? That is my favorite show to ever air on Adult Swim. At least you got "Tom goes to the Mayor" right. )

Honestly, I can't get into "Venture Bros." I've had multiple friends sit me down and show me multiple episodes of the "Brothers" trying to get me to like it. It just doesn't take, I can understand why people like it, it's just that I've seen the same jokes in countless movies, comic books, video games and it just doesn't do it for me. Although their title cinematic is brilliant, if the rest of the show had a similar design I could get behind it, and thirty minutes is just too long for that show.
In fact I was offered a chance to review Season One of he show and passed on it because I was worried that I couldn't give it a fair evaluation.
And I actually love "Strongbad" I was just taking an easy shot at the fanboys.

I have to assume that someone working for this site is an idiot. It's one thing to have a "fanboy" do a worshiping review of an obscure film, and another thing to have a reviewer who admits right off the top he does not like the show it's based on or get the humour it contains. Either Tyler should not of been chosen to review this film or he should at least have the ability to lose his ego and admit there can be value in something he doesn't 'get'. I think a better question for evaluating this film would be "is it worthy of the ATHF franchise?" And I would say that it is. A four-year-old would find "Gandhi" boring, does that make it a bad movie? No, a four-year-old cannot appreciate the film for what it offers. This is "Film Review 101" kind of stuff, and I believe what litaljohn meant when he said he (and I) have lost faith in this site.

but if you want movies to try something new but at its core KEEP THE STORY CENTERED AROUND THE TV SHOW like you said they should to "get it right" you would hate the movie anyway since you dont like the show which remains (drum roll please....) centered in its tv characters and shows.

also.....

"The financial success of the recent "Simpsons" and "Transformers" movies is doubt going to inspire a slew of green-lit feature films based on old television cartoon properties."

shouldn't that be "no doubt"? at least if you want it to make sence.
