I've been reading a lot of reviews on this movie. Although I haven't seen anybody compare it to Terrence Malick's work, it sounds like something he would have done.

Would you say this movie is comparable to The New World in pace and tone?

While I've yet to see "New World", I have seen Malick's other films and the comparison is apt.

This definitely felt like a Malick film. The long & languid pace, the poetic nature and the gorgeous cinematography. Whether that's a positive or negative is a matter of opinion. I thought there were also shades of "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" and "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid" as well.

For me, at least, the poetic nature of the film and its gorgeous cinematography were the work's highlights. I just didn't find the actual content of the film as moving as Malick's films or as engrossing as Altman's or Peckinpah's.
