The birth of Burton as we know him.
Batman solidified Tim Burton's standing as the perennial outsider who tweaks what we all think we know and infuses it with his affinity for for finding what darkness lies beneath the surface.
Part Frank Miller, part Greek tragedy, and all Burton, Batman sees the caped crusader tussling with the Joker as he likewise tussles with his own psychological demons. The Joker gets the screen time here, but Michael Keaton puts in a career-turning performance that broke all preconceptions of what to expect from this comic-cum-actor. Not to mention that Alfred is played by Michael Gough. And have you heard that Jack Nicholson plays the Joker? What more do you need?!?
Well worth the watch, but hold off on the purchase as a new special edition is rumored to be waiting in the wings...
Sean (...would those be the Batwings?...)

It's amazing isn't it.
You look at LOTR and Jackson, Spiderman and Raimi... underdogs taking on huge projects that may seem out of their league but proved themselves and then some beyond any previous speculation.
And Burton did the exact same thing in 89. After Big Fish I have no doubts of what the man is capable of but if I were to take my movie going self of today into the past and was told that the director of Beetle Juice and Pee Wee was going to create a new Batman film and the actor who played BJ was going to star in it.... I would of been assuming the worst much like I am now with Catwoman
.
I would love to see someone review this... but maybe you guys are holding out for that special edition.
Does anyone know how well the image quality is on this and Batman Returns?

On DVD, "Batman" doesn't look bad, but "Batman Returns" looks tired, dirty, and abused.
This disc was one of the first DVDs on the market back in 1997, so yes, we are waiting for the SE that will presumably be released before "Batman Begins" appears in theatres or when "Batman Begins" appears on DVD.

I was reading somewhere that they would be reissuing all 4 Batman movies this year with new extras and such. Has anyone been able to confirm or refute this?
