How is the visual quality? Or would you guys suggest holding out for the special edition that seems as if it's never going to be released?

Video quality is very bad. Grainy and washed out.

However, it's the only version you can get for now

It would be nice if they could actually come out with a version of this movie that makes it exciting to watch.

Tim,

Agreed. No version of this movie seems worth the amount of fuss that people raise.

Perhaps one needs to be a fan of the film noir genre to appreciate this "future noir," as it's been called. I love old detective/mystery films, and this one set in the future is a kick from beginning to end. I liked the old voice-over, though, that the director omitted from his Director's Cut. It was a wonderful throwback to the old forties days of Bogart and Mitchum.

As for the state of its video, it is a very dark film to begin with, so grain has always been an issue, even in theaters. It was also one of the handful of first DVDs ever to be released, and WB hasn't changed that status yet. So, the original print may not be what everyone wants (I can't remember it from the theater, anymore), but a new, widescreen, high-bit-rate, anamorphic transfer would be nice.

Hey, John, that wasn't very nice, digging at me and Tim about our apparent not-liking film noir. :p
