This movie is a high watermark of the genre and is what all other epics should aspire to be: an opulent, grandilocuent spectacle yet filled to the brim with layer upon layer of deep complexity of meaning.Despite being a consumate warrior, Beowulf is flawed, therefore bringing him close to us, the audience.
High concepts keep our brain cells in constant motion: Sex as an empowering arm that could be used to harm others, vanity and lust as sins that destroy the human-animal; etc.
Visually striking and gore filled, this is formidable entertainment.

I first saw part of this at my friend's comic book store. He has a lot of customers who are graphic artists and I assumed we were watching something one of them had made on his computer. I was watching and thinking "Well, it's idiotic and it looks pretty silly but for a DIY project, it's rather elaborate. Must have taken forever to make." I asked my friend who made it. He told me it was Beowulf. "You mean it's supposed to be a 'real' movie?" He said yes. I still don't believe him.
