I'm . . . I'm not with you guys on this one. Keep in mind, I consider you both very good friends, but this movie freaked me out! Yes . . . I had to sleep with the lights on. The only thing I could really fault it for is it reminded me quite a bit of "Hellraiser". I was expecting Pin Head to show up anytime, "We have so many sights to show you . . ."
Yeah, they opened a gateway to Hell and it got gory . . . what did you guys expect? There are many cultures that believe Hell is a place of absolute horror with dismembered bodies, fire, chaos, torture and lots of blood. Least not forget Dante's journey through Hell, even though it may be considered folklore, it is still a version of Hell that most people relate to. Sure, some religions believe it's just a dark place were literally nothing happens leaving a person in limbo, and the torture there is absence from God. But how would that make for a scary or intense film? I think people are much more attuned to the Catholic's Fire & Brimstone version of Hell, which better suits the movie.
Now I'm not saying the film is great, but it is much better than crap like the "AVP" franchise. As far as I'm concerned, it was effective in scaring me and it gave me a genuine feeling of . . . evil. (say that like Dr. Evil). And for what the film was about, the gore was expected. Again, they brought back Hell, I wasn't expecting the ship to be full of rainbows and daffodils. It delivered the version of Hell most cultures are accustomed too, so I don't think the film failed to be genuine to that belief. Yeah, it had some usual clichés but I have found other films in the horror genre to be much worse. Overall, the movie worked for me. The effects were pretty good, the acting was acceptable, the pacing was as good as one can expect and it scared me for days. Then again, I'm a big wuss when it comes to that style of a movie.
