I bet this movie is going to look killer visually. So many colors.

Remember that the first third or more of the film is purposely drab in color: browns, blacks, grays. The second half brightens up considerably when the kids enter the chocolate factory.

Isn't this film rated PG? Amazon has the Deluxe Edition listed as PG, but I have noticed a few other sites labeling the Deluxe Edition PG-13.
I'm fairly sure it's PG though, at least according to the back cover art.
With that in mind I can't wait for this DVD. I love the darker beginning scenes even more than those of the brighter factory. Should be a great DVD to add to the collection.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is rated PG. I have no idea why the details for the Deluxe Edition had it marked PG-13 (the other two editions were correct), but I changed the rating. Thanks for noticing it.

Definately different... definately not better. Though it may have been more faithful to the book, I didn't see a need to give Willy unresolved "Daddy" issues. Willy, like Candy, doesn't need a point. I was dissapointed by this movie, it didn't seem magical or as whimsical as its source. A shame.

I thought it was certainly different from the original, but still very good in its own way. Of course, I'm a Burton fan, so I did enjoy his touches much more, but as John pointed out, I can't say the film itself is any better. I thought it was more brilliant in color, yet darker and moodier in the right places. I, for one, enjoyed the less singing and really had no issues with the additional backgrounds to the characters.

Great review!
As I said before, I absolutely loved the darker feel to the beginning of the film (classic Tim Burton), and the latter portion lightened up to just the right amount in my opinion.
I do disagree though with your statement about the music. This film has one of the best soundtracks of the year, and those Oompa Loompa songs are just so darn catchy, particularly that of Augustus Gloop.
This is the best film I saw all summer, and I'm very happy for its arrival on DVD. Thanks for the great review, I was definitely interested in finding out more about the extras.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but wanted to comment on the reviewer's statement that "eggs have been replaced by nuts" in this version. The nut-sorting squirrels are straight out of the book -- the golden eggs in the Gene Wilder version was a change. This movie, in at least this one scene, apparently returns to the source material -- always a plus in a movie based on a book.

"...eggs have been replaced by nuts in this version." --John Whathisname
Sometimes one's phrasing is open to misinterpretation, for which I am here to blame. I had not meant to imply that nuts were not a part of the original book, only that nuts replaced eggs in my comparison to the first movie. Since I had been comparing the new movie to the old one for most of the review, I mistakenly assumed that the reader would know I meant nuts replaced eggs in the new movie as opposed to the older movie. I had not intended any reference to the book.
Anyway, thank you for pointing out the suspect wording, which I have revised for the sake of greater clarity.

Its not better. You can't say that for sure lol. Too different, and that would be putting down then original. Thats like saying the remake of "Annie" was better then original. No way!
I just saw that Circuit City is saying theres a 5 piece trading card set with it. Heres what it says, 2 versions:
Widescreen, Deluxe Edition, 5 Limited Ed. Trading Cards, 2PC, Slipsleeve Packaging DVD
price:
$19.99
and
Widescreen, Deluxe Edition, 5 Limited Ed. Trading Cards, 2PC DVD
price:
$22.99
What do you think? Which one would you get?
Note, both of these are the Deluxe ones, and there are also the standard Full and Wide.
Has anyone else seen these cards advertised with it? Or any other goodies?

Manta Raye,
I saw the same thing you did on Circuit City's website about the limited edition cards. It looks like amazon has the limited edition cards listed too. The Circuit City insert that comes in the Sunday paper states that a collectible book is also included. You can also get a free Wonka Bar at a couple of different retailers with the purchase of either edition.
I'm somewhat confused. I don't know why Circuit City is advertising two different versions of the deluxe edition. It looks like you get more with the 19.99 version than the 22.99 version. Not much more (Just a slipcase) but it still is quite odd.
It looks like the cards may come with the DVD no matter where you buy it. I'm not sure what Circuit City means by the collectible book but it might be worth a look.

Ok I think youre right, although its the night before its release lol. It looks like the UK has the cards too.
Some places advertise better then others for sales, which is better for us as well.
How sweet this movie, features, cover etc and to top it off, trading cards :D

HEY PPL!! Im so excited! I love this DVD!
Ok here is something I noticed in the DVD. I bought the 2-disc one with the slip cover. Dont know if they all will have this but lets try it.
Ok, open up the DVD, and take out the little booklet. The one that looks like a huge wonka bar. This is wierd, but.....smell it.
Now post below what it smells like. I know what it smells like to me, but I dont want to spoil the surprise!
Maybe this could be considered an easter egg lol I dont know.

Ha I heard about this smell...a nice touch, very nice touch. DVDs should appeal to the senses more often!
Mine arrives in the mail today, can't wait to open it and take a big wiff.

"Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is the first film I've gone to in years where most of the theater audience applauded at the end.
Really?! Were you sure they weren't clapping b/c it was finally over? ;-) I would say this was not a good movie at all. The color was really over-saturated, the audio was flat and I did not like seeing that freaking Oompa-Loompa guys face like a billion times in the movie...With all that can be done with CG, I am stuck with that. Although, after seeing the movie I did need a chomp on some chocolate. That's about the only thing satisfying about this movie.
Can't wait for Johnny Depp's ((a drunk (normal) Keith Richards)) Pirates of the Caribbean 2....yea right. Ahhhhh! Need more chocolate!

Aww how sad for you not thinking thsi movie IS FREAKIN GREAT! Well, ok maybe a little over done on my part, but it's good.
Ok, I think its been long enough. For those who will come across this later, the booklet smells like CHOCOLATE!
Maybe the reason you didnt get a booklet was it wasnt as soon as it was released? I dont know how that works. Maybe it could be like when a movie is on DVD, and you buy it like 2-3 years after the initial release, the trailers when you first put the disc in, for other movies are taken off. In some cases anyways. Not sure.
I love it and watched it again the other night :)
