Not to say this is a great movie (I found it very average) but I found the camera work suitably jerky. In fact, there were moments that were filmed too smoothly to be a regular guy operating a small handheld camera - of course I was somewhat glad for those calmer moments, but to me it suggests the filmakers had viewability in mind...or at least have some consideration of the amount of shake depending on the situation. (/waits for massive disagreement here).
Also, justification of a lunkhead filming all of this in a threatening situation is not necessary. There *are* people who will film anything, which is how we get all these crazy youtube clips and stuff online.

I didn’t love Cloverfield, but I did enjoy it. It’s basically a Godzilla movie from a unique point of view. It has obvious similarities to The Blair Witch Project because of the way it was shot but beyond that it doesn’t compare (in my opinion). I agree that the CGI graphics are well done, particularly for a camera that is wild and not locked down. I completely disagree with Jason that the film fails to “create tension” or even “mimic reality.” I also thought it was interesting that John said “the filmmakers make no attempt to explain” where the creature came from. What about the last shot?

SSCam99,
Yes, I know the shot at the very end to which you refer. However, apart from its being what I consider little more than another cute gimmick (and one most viewers would not even notice), it does not, as I said in the review, "attempt to explain what the creature is, where it came from, or what it wants." That's left to the imagination, which isn't a bad idea.

If you want to, check the history tab at Slusho. That pretty much explained things for me. The characters in the TV show ALIAS drank Slusho at some point. And a guy in the Cloverfield trailer was wearing a Slusho T-shirt. I haven't seen the movie yet so maybe I don't know if what I am saying will make sense!

I really liked this movie. I thought with all the hype the movie had it wouldnt meet any of my expectaions. Once the movie started rolling and getting into the party scene before the creature attacks, I had no expectations and i was just into everything happening. I can say this, it's definetly better then the Godzilla remake by a land slide.
