I'm reminded of the Simpsons' episode in which Bart nominates Mrs. Krabapple as Teacher of the Year. The judging panel watches all the tapes submitted for the award. One of them features a teacher aping Robin Williams from this movie. They sigh in exasperation and turn it off. One judge says: "Dead Poet's Society has ruined an entire generation of teachers!"

Funny thing is that I thought I am the only one in the world who disliked the movie. It is a bit pathetic one , isn't it?

Oh come on you bunch of grumps. I am someone who values realism in films and is sensitive to manipulation by filmmakers but this movie is a beautiful paean to the eternal exuberance of youth battling to be heard in a jaded adult world. Williams is decidedly not his usual annoying self here and does a great job. Yes, the film is somewhat cliched and forumlaic but as far as those types of movies go, DPS is far and away one of the best around.

Realism in film is exactly what this film lacked!

I hated it just because of its self-conscious bohemianism and my respect for Whitman.

The problem in the film isn't it's lack of realism - depending on the film, I think realism can be a huge mistake. The problem is that it presents itself in a way that suggests it IS realistic when it is anything but. Now THAT's a problem.

Well, I think the call on realism in a film, and depending on the film, is really a matter of preference and taste. For me I tend to lean towards wanting more realism in films because I find the typical Hollywood clich??s in telling a sentimental drama too sappy and weak. This is exactly what???s wrong with DPS is that it???s really telling us a story that we???ve all heard a hundred times over in other films. It brings no fresh and enlightening values to the table because it strays so far from anything believable because it simply relies on sappy clich??s. In the end, it just makes for a dull, over boring sap fest that would have been better told in an after-school special.

The problem isn't realism, it's just that the viewer gets exhausted after spending two hours trying to stay afloat in an an ever-growing ocean of treacle.

Its formula film done to perfection, if that's possible. It seems that the film is resented by some for refusing to accept the adult "reality" of a harsh and indifferent world. Some people cringe at the manipulation of the "Captain my captain" sequence while others feel euphoric. Sometimes a little manipulation is okay.

um, no one is denying that life is hard. however, it's not enough to say that life is hard. a movie has to do more than state the obvious. this is where "dead poets society" fails; it didn't do anything more than pour on the schmaltz.

mwahahaa has a good point about formula, though. Calling something "formulaic" doesn't automatically mean it's bad and, yes, sometimes manipulation is good. I don't think it's true in this case, but it's a fair point.
