The DP for the show was in the Future Shop I worked at last year, buying some new Home Theatre equipment and I got many people in our store hooked on the show and we even had the mini-series playing in the speaker room of the store on a nice big TV.
Anyway, he said the show is shot in HD, both the first and second seasons have been filmed digitally, as opposed to the miniseries which was shot on film.
I also believe that in some of the early Season 1 episode commentaries the producers and creators of this new re-imagining discuss the pros and cons to the format.
Also, in regards to its accesibility, my Mom, who had never seen an episode, ended up watching part of the second half of season one with me while I was helping her clean light fixtures, along with the season one finale, and she later watched the third or fourth episode of season two and aside for a few minor questions, was able to keep up with what was going on and really enjoyed the drama that the characters face including the acting as well as the gritty reality of the show. She's pushing 60 and plans on watching it weekly when it premiers again this month. The other day as well, I was taking down our holiday decorations and her friend, who is staying with us, watched a good chunk of the miniseries which I had put on during my de-decorating. She also really enjoyed what she saw and had no problem getting into it.
The nice thing about the show is that they do put effort into recapping where the show is at the beginning of the episode. No doubt, the viewer who has watched the show from the mini-series thru to now will find it more enjoyable, but I think the show is still accessible and not hard to get into at all.
