Unless you are in dire need of seeing the director's cuts, I would pass and wait for the Renewal to arrive. Basically last year or was it 2002... anyways... Gainax went back and drastically cleaned up the animation and re-released the series. First as a huge boxset (with the coolest box to boot) which is almost non existant now unless you are willing to fork over 500+. Then it was released as individual dvds. And this summer ADV will begin releasing these new versions director's cuts and all.
I'm a huge fan of the series and already own the previous release of the series but (sadly enough) will be buying it all over again. The restoration really makes it look years younger.
