Eddie,

Why does Criterion release this? They have released all the AK movies so far. Is it something to do with the rights?

Ranjan,

Yeah, this company has had North American video distribution rights to "Ran" since at least the early-1990s.

In essence, we are screwed with this crappy DVD.

I really don't know why it's so hard for Wellspring to do a good job consistently. I mean, they handle a lot of beloved or important titles on which people would gladly work for little money, so quality control shouldn't be this bad of an issue. :.(

Have you see - The Emperor And The Assassin? What do you think of it?

Ranjan,

Yeah, I've seen it. I didn't think much of it at the time, though after seeing "Hero", I probably should give "The Emperor and the Assassin" a second chance. However, as a recall, the movie was a tad long...

Thanks Eddie. Recently I have been buying some movies by Akira Kurosawa to complete my collection. I have the boxset for the 4 samurai movies, Ikiru, Lower Depths, and Rashomon. What are the other movies you would recommend? Can u put it in the form of a list? Thanks

Ranjan,

In all honesty, I have to admit that I'm not very knowledgeable about Kurosawa. However, I would say that you should not miss out on "High and Low", and a search of reviews here at DVD Town as well as a search of Kurosawa's career at IMDB should get you started.
