So I've heard some really dumb things about this release, basically that they just used a copy of the cut that aired on television years back as their extended cut. The just of it was that the picture was pretty washy, and profanity was left overdubbed as it would have been shown for TV audiences. Anyone checked this release out yet? I don't just mean DVDTown staff obviously, just a general question for everyone.

See, I didn't notice any of the cursing overdubs. Maybe I was too busy watching the transfer and stuff, but they didn't seem to stick out to me. The video is mixed: some sequences look extraordinary while others (near the end with cgi, mostly) have an enormous amount of grain and dirt on them.

I am watching it now, and have come to the conclusion that Universal is a bunch of lazy cash grabbing fools. This is absolutely nothing different than the tv version. Yes it has more scenes, but so much good stuff is cut out. VERY disappointing. This movie needs a special edition so bad, with all the trimmings. Whether you like the film or not, you can't deny that it is one detailed and original picture. And the making of on this thing would be one hell of an interesting watch. Kevin Costner is quoted repeatedly as defending this picture, so he is not embarrassed by it. It made its money back internationally. It is a film that Universal needs to give a better treatment to. Hell I think they like the Waterworld show at Universal Studios more than the movie that inspired it, because it has been playing there for so long. This is incredibly frustrating, I thought finally we would have a little love for the movie, but no, they simply copy and pasted the tv version onto a disc, give us some new artwork and shazam, people will buy. Dammit I wish they were wrong, cause I did buy it, and now I am regretting it. Please Universal, Kevin, give us a good release of this under-appreciated sci-fi epic.
