Dan, I watched this movie couple of weeks ago and boy it was tough sitting through it. I release that people are split into 2 camps. By the time I finished this movie I was really drugged!! 7/10 for me.

rpruthee,

Sounds like you didn't like the film. But at DVD Town a 7/10 rating is actually pretty high. In our rating system, 5's and 6's designate common, run-of-the-mill films; 7's are above-average films; 8's are very good; 9's are excellent; and 10's are classic.

Perhaps I misunderstood your reaction to the film.

John, I think it a type of movie with - love or hate feelings. I find myself in between. I found it very interesting for first 40 minutes or so but then it dragged too much. Gilliam's camera work was menacing and very weird. It almost got to the point of being really annoying. But then I suppose that was the intent of the movie.

The plot does not have much to it except drug addiction and all the craziness associated with it. I thought it was a good black comedy. Depp and Del Toro acted really well. After seeing this movie, I realized it is not a common movie, so I did not give it a 6. But it always felt it had a real good potential and that is why a 7.. It never reached the heights of "Trainspotting".

Scorsese's "Mean Streets" is on the way. Great film. But there are a couple of other items ahead of it, just because I already did "Goodfellas," and I've got to give equal time to some other stuff.

Tim actually gave 4/10 last time it was reviewed at DVDtown, so I am eager to see your thoughts on it. Will other movies from the Martin Scorsese collection be reviewed here?

That's because Tim is mean and grumpy.

The version I watched had a very bad picture and a lousy sound track to boot. If it has been restored to prime condition I'd consider giving "Mean Streets" another chance.

Yeah I can see that. I remember Scarface review. So what will be your new rating, Tim?

I'm not sure my friend, I'll have to see if they restored the film to a quality level.

Scorsese, however, seems to be the breaking point of taste between us critics here at DVD town. John mentions "Mean Streets" is great, but I don't. I Love "Goodfellas" & "Casino" as far as Scorses films go. Eddie only seems to like "Raging Bull", and even though I liked it as well, it is much different from what I like in Scorsese films. Also, John appreciates "Taxi Driver" where, Eddie and myself, couldn't care less about the film.

Scorsese films seems to have this certain divison between us critics here, but, oh well, you can't please everyone and that is what makes the world interesting and fun. ;)

I don't know if it's a great film or not, though I know I enjoy it. However, I would pick this as my favorite DVD package of all-time. The Thompson commentary track alone is a goldmine for any fan of the good doctor. I'd pay for Thompson to be buried with the gravehe designed in the documentary. We could dig up Nixon if we needed the extra room.

Besides, no movie can be truly bad when "White Rabbit" is on the soundtrack.

Seriously, this is the funniest movie I have ever seen and i'm not kidding. You should also check out Where the Buffalo Roam with Bill Murray playing Hunter S. Thompson, very early 80's film.
