In the late 70s Soviet studio Mosfilm produced a movie called "Career Change for Ivan Vasilevich" about Ivan the Terrible accidentaly travelling time to the future with all the funny consequences. In both that and Kate & Leopold we got royalty, a scientist who messed up, modern cities, (relatively, of course, because Moscow in late 70s is no match for New York in 2001, but still), and a predictable finale with the man from the past going home.

I tend to think that someone had seen the Russian film, told someone who knew someone in Hollywood and someone else thought it was a good idea. I may be wrong, but that??s the impression. Yet, I loved Kate & Leopold much more for it??s delightful humor even though I remember it was funny to hear the violent Tzar giving advice to his modern friend how to deal with women.
