and what will become of the movie itself on dvd, any word yet? It would be awesome if this package would be held back until we could get it together with the movie, but I guess that the studio will earn more money when releasing this together with the theatrical release, and then something new when the movie finds its way to dvd..?

Considering it's being sold through Amazon for 27.99 and has some cool Lithographs, I think it's a good deal. It's essentially for fans, only.

Hey there people,

Taking cue from the Extended Editions of the Lord of the Rings DVDs, it's pleasing to the eye to see a ton of special features for the upcoming film KING KONG. But i do wonder if such a wealth of extras are planted into these production diaries, what will the actual DVD presentation of KING KONG bring ?

I know that we can all expect at least a 4 Disc DVD boxset of KING KONG (rumored in April 06), but in terms of extras, what will it bring to the slate that is new? Will the feature be repackaged with the extras found in the production diaries? In terms of extras, i think we have hit a celing here and if there are new extras, what could they possibly be? other than deleted scenes! Is this just the studio's smart money making scheme to capitalise on the hype of KONG and maybe recover their 207 million dollar investment in KONG faster?

What do you guys think?

Personally, i hope that when the DVD for KONG arrives, it will contain a wealth of extras, the feature film as well as the original 1930s version of King Kong.... Somewhat similar to the recent DVD release of BEN HUR....

I'm keeping my finger cross!!!

thinesh1981,

Just curious - where do you get your rumors from?:). The movie is not even released yet and the 4 disc set comes out in April. I guess studios are thinking smart.:).

Also, the combo of 1933 KK and 2005 KK is impossible. Original KK is owned by Warner and the new is done by Universal (based on what I have read.)

Look for a review of this in the days leading up to its release. I'm looking forward to exploring what it has to offer before checking out the new version of "King Kong."

It wouldn't surprise me to see a 4-disc set for the new King Kong, and it would surprise me less if I found that these two discs made up the third and fourth of that set. But the real reason to invest in this now is the great art and the case.

Is there a "non-limited" edition of this set?

You made a slight mistake in your review of this set you mention that it rivals the Criterion Collection set for Memento but Criterion NEVER released Memento at all Did you mean another DVD from Criterion and get your titles crossed?

Andril,

Nope, just the whole kitten-kaboodle.

Jack,

You're right! I, for some reason, was absolutely convinced that the file-folder Memento release was done by Criterion. I guess I didn't give Sony the credit they deserved for that awesome packaging.

weird, a site over here (Norway) stated that they have one with only the production diaries... anyway, I just want the packaging really:P so it's a bit expensive, hehe

As for reusing these discs I don't think it will ever happen, PJ believes in not reusing any part of bonus features, I think if you want all of the extras you will need to buy Production Diaries, 2 Disc Special Edition, and the rumored 4 disc extended cut to get it all.

Indeed that is true, as the two disc edition soon to be released includes the remaining production diaries not found here-in. They mostly pertain to the post-production section. I think the 4-disc will have full-length documentaries, four commentaries, galleries and more terrific and clever packaging (basically a carbon copy of the LOTR sets, not that there is anything wrong with that).
