have you watched "ballad of a soldier" and "the cranes are flying"?
it's a shame that criterion doesn't try to release more and more of these soviet gems. of course, cold-war politics had a lot to do with these movies not being shown in the west at all, but what did we have to show for things? jerry bruckheimer and his spiritual heirs. (N)

Well, Criterion released both of those titles and now we have the Shepitko set.
I'm hoping that Eclipse will target Kira Muratova soon. Or maybe Elem Klimov though I admit I know nothing about her besides reputation.
The Cranes are Flying is very good. I saw Ballad of a Soldier but can't remember what I thought of it.
