There is new information on - EXTERNAL LINK - that this edition will also be rated PG-13 instead of R. Here is the quote from the Frequently Asked Question area of the site.

What are the MPAA ratings for each release?
The theatrical version of the movie, which will be on VHS and DVD in August, is rated PG-13. Although there was speculation that the Special Extended Edition (on VHS and DVD in November) would be rated R, it is actually rated PG-13. Both versions of movie received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA for epic battle sequences and some scary images.

Just a few comments on the staff members review - (1) There will never be a 6-disc set of FoTR. Im sure there will be a box set of the entire three films, but the Extended Edition is as much material you will ever see. Peter Jackson and Co. have been very clear on this. So have fun waiting for that six disc set, buddy. (2) Im not being picky, Im really not. Its not that hard to understand. Theres no such thing as "LOTR 1" or "LOTR 2". There never has been and there never will be. "Fellowship" and "The Two Towers" are the first part of "The Lord of the Rings". "Return of the King" is the third and final part. Simple as that. For something to be called "LOTR 2" it would have to be a sequel to Lord of the Rings, and would probably have to do with the affairs of Gondor in the Fourth Age, the reign of King Ellessar and Queen Arwen, the affairs of the Hobbits before they leave the Grey Havens, and the general decline of Elves in Middle-earth through sailing away to the Undying Lands. Furthermore, it would have to be very much fabricated since, although Tolkien left these details in his appenices of LoTR, they are there for further information only, not to tell another story at all. (3) The reviewers comment that Frodo has to "collect" each companion for the fellowship sounds like this staff member has been playing way too many RPGs. (4) The only thing Boromir is "unsure" of is the Ring. Other than that there is nothing "unsure" about him. He is a stout, brave man whose goodness and nobility are unquestionable. Just because he fell to the temptation of the Ring doesnt mean he was "unsure" or not "good" enough. (Spoiler ahead) Tolkien makes it clear that every member of the fellowship is susceptible to the temptation of the Ring, and even Frodo at last falls to that temptation and fails his quest (which, of course, is completed by someone else - who youd never guess if you havent read the book).

If you had actually read my review carefully rather than skimming it, you would know that I did not ask for a 6-disc set. Rather, I wrote that if New Line had decided to include the theatrical version, the extended version, and all the extras offered by both sets in one release, THEN there wouldve been a 5-/6-disc set. Also, if you had read my reviews of both the 2-disc and 4-disc sets, then you would know that I know that "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King" form 1 complete book. The "Lord of the Rings" was split into 3 parts to be an easier sell to the public (since most people have an aversion to buying really long books). My using the abbreviations of "LOTR 1", "LOTR 2", and even "LOTR 3" are simply a shorthand way of referring to the parts of the story.

You say that youre not picky? Boy, you certainly sound like it when you go after words that do not have to be interpreted so single-mindedly.

Finally, Ive never played an RPG in my life. I dont know why people like to assume things, just as they assumed that I play too many video games after my Final Fantasy review. Ive never owned a Playstation or a PS2, so I dont even know what happens in those video games. Likewise, I wouldnt know where to start if an RPG sat down on the ground in front of me.

Not to worry, Eddie. I think "Heir.of.Elendil" is one of those snotty kids from the Rotten Tomatoes site. If youd like, I can call some of my Italian friends to go take this bozo for a ride out in the desert?

Big just got bigger. I got the chance to see the Extended version yesterday and I must say it is very good. The scenes add to the story and make some plots in the film more logic and understandable.

The best DVD of 2002. No doubt!

One word to describe this DVD set. Awesome!

I watched the whole thing last night and was awed once again. It was long, but I hardly noticed it as I enjoyed the new parts so much. They definately added to the flow of the movie and helped to make the characters deeper. It also gave a more vivid feel for what Middle Earth is as much of the extras was also used to set the atmosphere of the film.

The picture quality is superb. Blacks are black, colors are brilliant w/o any bleeding. I didnt noticae any pixelation or graininess either.

The best part was the sound. I set it to the DTS track and was blown away. The mixing of the channels is perhaps one of the best Ive heard. The bass is effectively used and very deep and rumbling -Ive never heard my sound system go that low and rumble quite that much with any other movie before.

This is a must get DVD set. I got it for $25 and Target. Perhaps the best DVD of 2002.

This is the LORD of the DVDs. It IS my PRECIOUS. It gets 11 out of 10, its that good.

The film is even better than the theatrical version, and the extras are the best I have seen to date. Even Pearl Harbor DC is dwarfed in the presence of this.

The picture and sound are perfect, and even better than in the cinema !!!!

I cant wait for LOTR:TTT EE, due Nov 2003.

I am not going to comment upon the movies themselves, since everyone is well aware that they are very good, and suitable for a wide audience. Instead I shall comment only upon the technical qualities of the set.
If you did not enjoy the theatrical version of this film, then you probably will not enjoy the Extended Edition either.
As far as the movie goes, it isn't perfect(as if anyone could really make a perfect Lord of the Rings trilogy!), but it definately has become my favourite trilogy, surpassing the original StarWars trilogy.
As far as the techical qualities of this DVD go, this DVD set is unsurpassed, and will probably go unsurpassed until BlueRay HD-DVDs make thier appearence in 2005. By DVD set, I mean the collective DVD sets of all three members of the trilogy. If you wish to show your system off to your friends, this is the DVD set to go with! The movies are enjoyable, and stand repeated viewing, the picture quality is perfect, and thanks to the DTS6.1 Discrete mix, the sound is actually better than in some cinema halls. It is recommended that the viewer watch this DVD on atleast a 5.1 Surround system equipped home theatre.

Heir of Elendil, I am the hair on my chin. Talk about the greatest dvd product series of the decade. 10 words for its title, 10 hours for its extras, and that's just the metaphorical value. A gargantuan dvd release, got this used for $20 at a video games store, selling like hot cakes and lemonades! The film is boring, and so are the extra features. BUT, the book is even more boring! Luckily, the dvd is out of this world. :@ (Enough with the cliches!)
