Please tell me this will be more than a bare-bones, naked edition that leaves you wanting to throttle someone!!!! I checked Amazon and it seems, oh, yes, that's what we are getting!!! i mean ccome on, like we haven't been waiting long enough for a decent edition of this!!! i hope i am not the only one, but i certainly don't feel like waiting another five years to get the "right" version.

jaejae,

Because this is one of WB's "catalogue items," that is, it's neither a new release nor a classic release, it includes only a few bonus items. WB, like most studios, only does special editions of new feature films or of older films it deems are of important classic or historical interest.

You can understand WB's position: They have a huge backlog of films and probably can't afford to spend a lot of money on each of their DVD releases if they don't think they'll sell well. "The Name of the Rose" was never one of their big box-office winners nor was it very critically well received.

That said, the several bonus documentaries the disc does include are quite good.

Plus, I liked the movie, but, then, I just like Connery, even in sandals.

Hi John,

i just read some review comments on Amazon and a lot of people are complaining because the movie isn't being released in widescreen!!! Whats up with this, John can u tell me the real story? In your review you did mention that it is in widescreen!

please let me know, thanks John

jaejae,

I looked up the reader comment on Amazon you mention, and I see it was posted before the DVD had been released. In other words, the writer hadn't actually seen the DVD transfer.

The movie's original theatrical-exhibition ratio was 1.85:1. On DVD it shows up across my television screen at 1.74:1, a normal loss of some edge due mostly to overscan.

So, as I said in my review, yes, the movie is in widescreen. (Although 1.85:1 is hardly a "wide" screen anymore; it is, in fact, today's standard small widescreen.)

I was very excited when I found out that they were going to release a region 1 dvd of this movie and promptly purchased it when it was released.
I enjoyed the bonus documentary as well as the photo video journey with the director.
It was unfortunate that deleted scenes were not included. I could be wrong but I remembered reading (a long while ago) that there was an extended version of this movie that was screened abroad.
Any how, thats not my main complaint here as I had to return my copy for an exchange at Best Buy because the video/audio skipped at the very end of the movie - prior the credits (at about 2:07:14).
I just came home and played the replaced copy and found the same problem at precisely the same place!
Did Best Buy receive a bad batch?
If Best Buy did receive a bad batch, is there a way one can get a replacement from Warner Home Video directly?
If anyone can offer any other suggestions, I'd welcome it as this is one of my favorite movies and to have a copy on DVD would be a good thing, don't you agree?

I don't believe WB sells discs direct, but they would probably like to know of the problem.

Now that I think about it, my copy did make a slight hesitation at the very end; it was so slight I assumed it was a piece of dust on the disc surface, and then the film immediately went on playing. I suspect that the whole production run may be defective in the same manner, with some DVD players correcting the error, and others not.

You might want to ask Warner Bros. about the issue and get back to us.

John
