Thanks for the great review. I am planning to watch this movie tonight. I have waited for this movie for too long - xploited cinema has some crappy version and I am glad it didn't buy it. Mezoguchi's Ugetsu, Sansho, Life of ohara are some of the great movies one can see. Tragedy, hope , and self belief goes hand in hand for Kenji.

Sometimes I get a little tired of Criterion focusing so much on the "Japanese masters" but this time I'll forgive them. It's amazing how long it has taken for any of Mizoguchi's work to get Region 1 DVD releases. I'm not demeaning Kurosawa but it's kinda silly that we have about two dozen of his films available in R1, and only 3 (maybe more?) Mizoguchis.
