I liked this movie a little bit more than you did, Hock, but you make some very valid criticisms. I was worried about how this movie would be transfered to DVD because of the unique style, but it sounds like it made out alright.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, but I am a sucker for movies with a load of eye-candy. I thought it was some pretty remarkable work for a film that was completely shot on blue screen. It did blemish that acting a little, but I think with enough practice at this unique way of filmmaking, the actors will eventually adapt and get better at it. I think actors that have great improvisational skills will excel in this type of format.

Overall, I thought it was very entertaining; slightly dull at times but still wonderful to look at. I mean, after all, if you really do want dull, boring, and stale with many cool visuals, then check out "Final Fantasy".

Ouch! Hater! Final Fantasy's a great, true science fiction movie. Far better than I, Robot anyway. :p

I liked Sky Captain, its a movie you can see with parents and grandparents and all will enjoy. So what if it isn't the most thrilling or intelligent movie ever. It keeps you entertained. Rent it.

This was the best sci-fi movie I have seen in a long time. I was glued to the RPTV. The audio was also supreme and worth mentioning. I did get a "Does it have to be so loud?" from the wife, but really it was not over-bearing.

I think I would have had an even better experience had I not known everything was CGI. I went in sub-consciously or consciously looking for imperfections.

Walmart has the movie with a bonus featurette disc + 3 trailers.

15 dollars.

I finally got around to watching my copy (which I bought on release, but have been a smite busy) and was utterly blown away by the audio track on this film. It was full and had some exquisite local effects, planes wizzing around the room. It made a fun movie even... well, funner! (It seems an appropriate term for Sky Captain, for some reason, since it really is a 12-year old fantasy film.)

Yes, the sound is awesome. I think I enjoyed this film more at home than in the theater for that very reason.

I have a Q. Back in the Fall of 2004, Best Buy gave away a free "Special Sneak Preview Of Sky Captain..." DVD. In it is a game called, "The Flying Legion Air Combat Challenge". I don't have a DVD-ROM. Does anybody know what that is? Is this a flash game?

I liked the look of the film. Still, it's one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Good grief, it would have been nice if they'd taken a few moments out to at least pay lip service to telling a story.

But yes, the soft focus was kinda a nice look. It wore out it's welcome after about ten minutes though.

One of the reasons I like this film so much is that I grew up in the era of old B&W serials and TV shows with heroes like Commando Cody and Sky King, shows that this motion picture pays tribute to. For me, "Sky Captain" was fun, nostalgic stuff brougt up to date in modern picture and sound.

But for a lot of younger folks it probably does seem hopelessly old-fashioned and lightweight. The Wife-O-Meter didn't like it all that much, either. Oh, well. I'm in a minority here.

John,

You're not in the minority, I liked it and just purchased it for $10 at Hollywood Video. My kid loved it and she's only 12yrs old. Besides, only our opinions should count, right?

I don't mind old B&W serials etc. Half my collection is older films (well - maybe half is overstating it). One of my favourite buys last year was The Tarzan Collection Starring Johnny Weissmuller. But I thought Sky Captain did a poor job of being an homage. It didn't capture any of the spirit or the fun, just the look - which a still photograph can do.

Maybe I was in a cranky mood when I watched it and need to give it another chance. But I kept looking at the timer the first time to see how much longer it had to go.

(Now Indiana Jones? There's an homage that works!)

Watched this last weekend and pleasantly enjoyed it.

This film is one setpiece propelling you to the next, most of the time leaving you in the dark. It captures more of the feel of a matinee serial that was put together into a feature than it does a film of that day like a film like say the Rocketeer does. Similarly, a film like Raiders of the Lost Ark shows you the goal and what's at stake up front, whereas this film fills in the blanks for the viewer only when the principals come across the clues. Gotta say I enjoyed it.

Stunning visuals, a flamboyant score, and some good tongue in cheek acting pull this one together to be a pretty swell experience.
