Aside from a few gripes (mostly the tedious relationship with Lana) here and there, I find Smallville very entertaining. Nice production values for a tv series.
Tom Welling was a near perfect casting call. He has the look and the physical prowess. Much like Maguire in the SM movies he is able to portray heroic characteristics but not without insecurities.
But I believe Michael Rosenbaum and his portrayal of Lex is the show stealer. He showcases quite a bit of talent in creating a character totally likeable but at the same time full of uncertainty as a trusthworthy person.
If you can overlook the first seasons episodic "monster of the week" nature there is plenty of character developement (especially with Clark & his father thanks to John Schneider ) and entertainment to be found.
