As far as I can tell on the copy Sony sent me, the full-screen version is a pan-and-scan affair. And the picture quality on it is only so-so. I still liked the film, though. Fun stuff; a super-hero movie with heart.

Not a big fan of the film. Thought many of the CGI effects where very bad. In my collection it ranks with the likes of Tomb Raider.

A just above average action movie that doesnt come close to Lord of the Rings. But hey, taste is a hard thing.

OK, now im a big fan of comic-book movies, I absolutely love Superman 1 & 2, Batman, The Crow, and Blade 1 & 2; but this film is NOT anywhere near any of the above. Admittingly, it is above average, but it does not distinguish itself enough to warrant any great deal of praise.

The climax is all to sudden, the build-up lacks depth, and I ended up caring for Osborn/Goblin more than for Spidey. The CGI stood out like a sore thumb, and kept reminding me that this is a movie. In comparison, LOTR: FOTR convinced me that middle earth and its characters are real. In all, a poor transition to the big screen. It leaves me wondering, how did it manage to make soooooooooooooooooo much money at the BO ???

The DVD is not much better than the film. Infact, it reflects the film perfectly. Alot of hype, but not much substance. I read somewhere that the this DVD was going to set the standard. unfortunately, is falls far short of even the average DVD released in recent times. The picture and sound are good, but not great. The extras are the kind you will watch once and never return to, unlike the LOTR:FOTR EE, which I have gone back to 3 times already. The extras here are simply filler material, very much like the movie itself.

"With great power comes great responsibility."
Whoa, what's going on here?
Okay, I used to collect Spider-man comics when I was young, and I was very anxious to see Spider-man. The trailers looked good, the cast/crew were great. What could go wrong? I saw the film and needless to say I was surprised at how great this film is. It's the rarest of the rare: A summer blockbuster that has genuine plot/heart that stays true to the source material and is still action-packed. Whil I will probably always view Batman and Batman Returns as the best superhero flicks, I consider Spider-man a close second at equal quality of the first two Superman flicks. The CGI was noticeable at times, but its obvious that they are using CGI when you see impossible human feats being performed. The characters were all developed to the fullest while still leaving room for more n the sequel. The acting was very good by all. Cliff Robertson had a brief yet memorable role as the concerned, loving Uncle Ben. Tobey Maguire played perfectly the loner with a secret Peter Parker, Willem Dafoe shined as the insane Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst took on Mary Jane with lots of spunk and energy, J.K. Simmons was an absolute HOOT as the smart-ass wisecracking J. Jonah Jameson, Rosemary Harris had the right caring nurturing attitude of Aunt May, and Larry Franco showed true depth as the neglected and vulnerable Harry Osborn.Sam Raimi's direction retained the comic book roots and the hero atmosphere of Spider-man while adding dark/evil elements when appropriate with the Green Goblin. The action scenes were all very well done. The final fight of SPider-man vs. Green Goblin took me by surprise, as it was very dark and Spider-man took a sever beating. I like how they weren't afraid to show Spider-man getting whooped on. In other hero flicks, the heroes get punched and kicked bu they are hardly ever serioulsy hurt. They truly exposed the vulnerablility of Parker, since he is still a mortal man that can be injured. The ending was also great, as it didn't yield to the usual happily-ever-after formula. MJ finally loves Peter, but he can't get close because he is concerned with her safety. The costume wasn't altered and kept its true form as in the comics. I hate it how some comic book movies change the costume to suit a wider audience and they lose touch of what the hero is all about. They had to alter the Green Goblin costume slighlty from a rubber suit Halloween costume to an armor body suit because the costume would have been ridiculous. I liked the Goblin costume, and how you could still see Dafoe's eyes and mouth so that he had to communicate and act withthose alone, which he pulled off nicely. The schizophrenia scene in the mirror was brilliant and chilling. Everything about this film was just right, and it outdoes or ties with every other superhero film. I couldn't find a reason to hate it. SInce I read the comics, I know how Spider-man should be and the film hit it right on the head. I CAN'T WAIT for Spider-man 2, the trailers are amazing!
MY RATING: 10 out of 10

The DVD has some fluff but also some great bonus features on the making of the film, the comics with real interviews with illustrators/writers, etc. The sound/picture are fabulous. What a great movie! I disliked how Daredevil and other recent hero films tried to repeat this formula with muddy results. Stick with the best.
I appreciated and enjoyed the origin story in which Peter Parker screws up a lot in developing his powers, unlike most hero flicks where they master their power immediatly and unrealistically. This movie was just great in all ways. Do yourself a favor and add it to your collection! Other great superhero movies: Batman, Batman Returns, Superman 1 and 2, The Crow, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (everyone hets this movie but me), The Hulk, X-Men 1 and 2, etc.

"This is my gift. This is my curse. Who am I? I'm Spider-man."

Be sure to see Spider-man 2. It tops the original, a nearly impossible feat, and it has the perfect mix of drama, pathos, action, romance and fantasy! Great acting!
