Great review, (although I would have been a bit harder on the film's value) I just wanted to point out that James Doohan, Walter Koenig, and William Shatner weren't the only one's who wanted to reprise their roles. Leonard Nimoy and DeForrest Kelley were supposed to be with Shatner on the Enterprise B, but both had other commitments and that's the only reason it's Scotty and Chekov instead of Spock and McCoy. In fact, Leonard Nimoy was asked to direct, but said there were too many problems with the script to fix in time for production. And we all know how right he was!

I know, that's one of the many things that could have saved the movie, and in the long run the franchise.

As a Trek fan I've always liked this movie and am looking forward to the special edition. It's certainly better than Nemesis and Insurrection. By far, actually.

Between Generations, Insurrection, and Nemesis, Nemesis is my favourite, in fact, it's one of my favourite Trek movies. I don't really see why it's so hated. Insurrection was good, not the best, but good. I even liked Generations, and I think Kirk dying was a good idea, I just would have liked to see him doing something a little more worth while when he went, like Data in Nemesis, or Spock in Wrath of Khan. But I am definately looking forward to the Special Edition all the same. Maybe Kirk's alternate death will be better, I guess we'll see on Tuesday...

According to Digital Bits this is being recalled because one of the extra features that's listed on the box isn't on the disc...

So they wont recall The best Trek film, The Undiscovered Country and fix the upside down disc, but they'll recall Generations just because there isn't a trailer? They need to straighten out their priorities...

the second disc (the bonus features disc) not only has a picture of the Enterprise B instead of the Excelsior, but it is also upside down. Paramount has started getting sloppy, it's just a shame it had to be with The Unsdiscovered Country. And now Generations. It's a shame. It's also a shame that Jayburd was right, I just called a local DVD retailer, and Generations really was recalled. Grr on Paramount.

Well I managed to find the movie at my local Virgin Megastore... I never thought I'd say this, but I prefer Kirk falling off with the bridge, him getting shot worked much less for me. Go figure.

I actually prefer the idea of Kirk getting shot. It just seems to make sense that a disruptor blast might finally catch up with him...

Well, maybe I just had trouble with the scene because of the lack of music and what not, I dunno, I'm gonna stick to the bridge ending, you can have the blaster one. Now everyone is happy. Yay!

No, I won't be happy until they make the disruptor blast the real Kirk death scene again. Besides, I couldn't find a copy. All the stores I tried happily sent theirs back. Too bad. I was looking forward to watching it again.
This is one of those movies that I love despite how deeply flawed it is. There's so much going on to keep a Star Trek fan happy. Particularly a Next Generation fan which I have been since their pilot episode. Aside from the virtue of it being the first Next Generation feature film it has Worf getting promoted; Data struggling with his new emotions in that visually awesome Stellar Cartography scene; the Duras Sisters causing half the Enterprise D to blow up and the other half to crash land; Picard meeting Kirk (contrived but fun); and Malcolm McDowell playing a villain whose primary motivation is to be with his family again. Meanwhile Picard gets to meet the (second) family he never had. Only in a Star Trek movie can all these things happen. Unfortunately they do not happen cohesively which is why, as a stand alone movie, it doesn't measure up to II or IV. But it paved the way for First Contact, it's successful successor.
I have similar thoughts about Star Trek III.

I agree, Generations was great for The Next Generation, as it should have been since it was primarily their movie. I also loved the Enterprise-B opening. I just think they could have had much more interaction with Picard and Kirk. I watched the movie with Brannon Braga and Ron Moore comentary, and even they said they didn't exploit the captains enough. I think the movie did its job as best as it could given the factors, but I still can't agree to the disruptor, it was such a slap in the face death, he just died. At least with the bridge sequence he had a nice final moment with Picard. I'd be happiest if he didn't die, or had died on the Enterprise, but between the two options we were given I have to take the bridge. The disruptor blast just doesn't work for me. Again, I never thought I'd be defending him falling to his death, go figure...

Kirk died like he should have, falling off a cliff because of his own weight. he was my least favorite captain aside from Janeway. she was the worste thing star trek ever created.

Well I'm sorry you don't appreciate how great Kirk was, because he was, but do you have a reason for not liking Kirk besides the fact that William Shatner is overweight? As far as captains, Sisko was my least favourite, I actually liked Janeway, but not as much as Picard, and of course, Captain Kirk has always been the best.

I know that theatrical trailers aren't a huge movie incentive, but if Paramount really does value its Trek Fan Legacy, it should make up for the mis-labled blunder on this disk by putting the Generation trailers on First Contact. Most of the fans will be getting all of the movies anyway so it won't make a difference. Besides, I like seeing the trailers, its like seeing a bit of history.
