Who cares? It's George during the beginning of his prime! Personally it could be worse than Episode 1 (which is still a great movie, only it has the title: 'Star Wars' tacked onto it, so it had to compete with 'The Trilogy'). George has always been a visionary director, and he's redone many of the effects shots in this movie (well... i guess that could be a bad thing, knowing George Lucas) to keep this film up to par (technologically) with todays movies. Buy it without renting it or even seeing it. Be completely unsure of the film when you put it into your player and just enjoy the ride. Unless you're a very cautious and boring person, in which case rent it or watch it on tv (good luck) or if it happens to be playing in a theatre near you (It's coming out in a limited theatrical run I believe) spend lots of money to watch it. Fill George Lucas' wallet even more! In conclusion: it is cheaper and easier to buy the movie (at Walmart preferibly), not like it and take it back for an exchange with something you like (Walmart does that you know), than it is to rent it, like it, then buy it, costing $5 more. ;)

is this movie really any good? the preview looks inticing, but i would like an opinion from someone who has seen this. hopefully the 2 disc wont be very expensive, so if indeed the film is praised, i can pick it up cheap :D

I've never heard of an 88 minute film being too long.

Everything is relative. As Einstein explained it, "Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity."
If an 88-minute movie is moving too slowly for you, it can seem like an eternity.

For that matter, an awful ten-minute short movie can be too long, too.

Hi guys! I know I haven't been here in a while, my computer was revamped, but I'm back! :)
According to this site, this should've been released on Tue. Sept. 14. I can't find it anywhere (internet sites excluded). Is this really out or was it delayed?

Considering I've got mine sitting on the floor at home waiting to be viewed, I can honestly say it was. I got it from Samgoody.com because I had a gift-card to burn.

i got this today, and found 2 things on the packaging that puzzled me. it doesnt list how wide the picture, just that its widescreen (now i know its 1.85:1, from the details page here), and it has the THX logo on the bottom of the back of the box, but it doesnt say "THX Digitally Mastered", like the star wars dvds. does any one know why?
ps- i cant wait to see this one! and the cover art is amazing. i thought it was a photo, until closer inspection i found it was a painting!

It is THX mastered for sound and video, no matter why it doesn't have the info spelled out more clearly on the box. Maybe the studio didn't want to confuse buyers, what with the name of the film having "THX" in it and all.

John,
Oh, you certainly quibbled with a "classic" by giving it a "6". :)
Anyway, I just got this today, and the final vehicle chase is pretty fascinating. I liked the sound effects that the moviemakers used--the cars and the motorcycles were cooler than they would've been had Lucas and Murch used "normal" sounds.

I enjoyed watching THX again, and thought most of the "updates" were OK, but I sure wish the original, "pure" version had been included.
Regarding the DVD itself, I at first thought the edition was brilliant. After a while, however, I got a little miffed at how the new additions to the movie weren't really mentioned. While watching "Artifact from the future", I got downright depressed: here was a 30 minute retrospectacle which was in itself informative and entertaining, but at the same time blatantly dishonest. There are lots of people talking about the making of the movie three decades ago; how it was made on a limited budget, how it was shot on location, what kind of impact it had at the time... and at the same time you're being shown clip after clip which are the products of cutting edge 21st century computer technology. Heck, if I don't remember incorrectly, while there was talking about the on-location shooting, there were even scenes which were mostly CGI, and at least one scene which wasn't even in the original. As if this is the way it has always looked.
And consider Don Pedro Colley's recollection of shooting a scene with just a handful of extras ??? illustrated by the "enhanced" version of the scene, with vastly expanded sets and thousands of computer generated extras!
It might've been OK if there had been at least a featurette about the numerous enhancements made to the movie ??? some of them quite breathtaking. As it is, presenting the image that not only was this version of the movie what was intended, THIS is the way it's always LOOKED ??? it sure looks good, but it tastes kind of sour.

I wish the original version of this would be released. I like the Director's Cut alright, but I think I prefer the original. This is a great film though, in either version.
