chris,

schumacher and bay may well be redeemed by people younger than us. they love the crap that those two idiots make.

an auteur study of schumacher would be interesting (making batman movies was a dress rehearsal for "the phantom of the opera"), but i wonder what an auteur study of bay would yield?

by the way, "cries and whispers" was great, too.

I have said before that when comparing Renny Harlin and Michael Bay (if one is masochistic enough to do such a thing) you could say at the very least that Bay really is an auteur of some sorts. He has a style... you know when you're watching a Bay film. Whereas Harlin is simply the most generic, non-descript lump you'll ever find... though Stephen Sommers is now vying for that honor.

By the way, in the new issue of Film Comment, the infamous Slavoj Zizek picks his "guilty" pleasures and starts off by stating that "Cries and Whispers" might be the worst film ever made. He then goes on to name "Freddy vs. Jason" as one of the overlooked masterpieces.

the fact that that dude even saw "freddy vs. jason" is disturbing.

your observations about the false religious dichotomies would seem to be reasons enough to reject this movie outright.

The conversion from paganism to Christianity is a crucial part of Scandinavian history, though folks like me who were raised on Thor comic books might wish it had never happened. Of course if it hadn't happened then I guess Thor wouldn't have been a Marvel superhero, but maybe Jesus would have been. Hmm.

Anyway, I don't think the film should be rejected simply because I don't accept its take on religion. That's just my reaction. Many people will mind it quite moving, as Ang Lee clearly does.

chris,

when i saw both "deep impact" and "armageddon", people were crying at the ends of both movies. yet, this doesn't make either movie worth watching.
