For what it's worth, I agree with you. The heroics at the end tended to diminish the film's overall credibility, as did a few of the driving scenes, but otherwise the movie maintained a steady pace and a serious tone. I saw it twice in a theater and enjoyed it both times.

Yeah,
I have to agree with both John and Neo05! I saw it twice at the cinema (it wasn't that well received in South Korea) and enjoyed it even more the second time round! I feel that there were two camps that didn't like the movie. One was the group who felt that it didn't stay true enough to the original. The other group was expecting more of a conventional action blockbuster...well, what they got was a bleak, dark, moody film with elements of horror thrown in to add to the depressive ambience. I was rather happy that it failed to meet the expectations of the action summer blockbuster masses. I loved it and can't wait to sample it on my new 37inch LCD TV! Yipeeeeeeee!!!!

Yes I will start to like it more when i see again on dvd but this and Episode III in my opinion were the best films this summer either though some will disagree placing this after Batman Begins which I liked but this movie lived up to what i wanted it to be dark and scary as hell.

Someone has to explain to me how they could possibly consider this a great film, or even a good one. I'm looking at you John. Maybe if someone could show me the positive aspects of this film I might like it more. Unfortunately I'm a Spielberg completionist and therefore must pick this film up, but I did not enjoy it at all.

I mean u have to lower your expectations some the most positive thing about the film is the level of suspense.

Don't look at me. I didn't say it was a great film; I merely said I enjoyed it, twice. It's generally serious, suspenseful, realistic by sci-fi standards, intense, easy to believe in, well produced, well acted, and well supported by good production design and graphics.

But that's not to suggest you're going to like it as well as I did. And nothing anyone who does like the film says about it will probably convince you otherwise. Movies are very personal experiences, and the best of them are hated by some people, while the worst of them are loved by some people. It's a mysterious business.

Hi All,

Yeah, I have to agree with John. Movies are very, very personable things. Sure there are instances when movies move beyond personal opinions and enter the realm of "greatness" but for the majority of movies out there it's pretty subjective. I mean, I have a huge soft spot for "Event Horizon" although I wouldn't call it a classic. As far as "WOTW" is concerned I thinks it's a great movie in many respects however I know it won't be considered one of the "greats". Nonetheless, I thorughly enjoyed it!

Definitely a movie you had to see in theater, and on a step down, a nice HDTV with a kicking system.

I just can't see myself enjoying it nearly as much on a regular television without surround.

I enjoyed it as well. The funny thing about the ending is that it's one of those cases that stick with the book, but yet people bash it because of it. Now if it had strayed away from the book, the same would have happened. Can't please everyone.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILER

Depression,

As I remember the book from having read it many, many years ago, I do not believe it included Tom Cruise and hand grenades.

Well, Neo, you???re probably right that it is damn good enough for what it is. I think what it boils down to is it???s a Spielberg film, and after so many years of outstanding work from the master, it???s only natural to expect greatness in everything he does. So when he delivers a film that has obvious flaws, well, this too is only natural for us to wonder what went wrong or could have been better, and especially coming from a guy that has set the bar so high as a filmmaker that not even his own blemishes go unnoticed. Thus the reason my expectations for his work are set very high, but hey, it???s his own fault for making so many great films.

The problem is that at the end of the rollercoaster... is the biggest piece of schmaltz ever committed to screen.

No, the virus ending I have no problem with... it's the **SPOILER** Reunion in Boston. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible.

Yes, the reunion was pretty bad. And the fact that Tom and family were able whip through the freeway with ease because each car just happened lay a path for them. And a Jumbo jet that crashed into a major neighborhood and just happens to do no damage whatsoever to the van Tom had stolen -- In fact, it still sat in the drvieway where he parked it uneffected by the sheer physics of impact. And the fact that someone's camcorder just happened to still be working after an EMP wipes out every electronic device. And . . . well, I think you get the point.

That movie was great. The ending was weak. But everything before the ending was so cool. It kept you on the edge of your seats. It was better then what i expected going into the theater.

Why do I feel compelled to buy everything Spielberg's name is attached to? I already pre-ordered this edition...
The special features had better be good! (Can we expect a review any time soon? I realise there is already a great theatrical review provided on this site, but a DVD review would be good too.)

Tim and I are reviewing the regular, bare-bones edition, and if Justin gets the Limited Edition from DreamWorks, he'll review it separately.
