They're not really criminals. But everybody's got to have a dream.
An offbeat crime caper that turns convention on its head, BOTTLE ROCKET is "the sort of endearingly oddball project that will be remembered for years to come... for the formidable talent it introduces to the world" (Michael Medved -New York Post).
First-time director Wes Anderson displays a sure hand, creating carefully composed scenes full of rich detail (shot on 27mm film, to ensure greater depth of field), schematic use of color, and amusing, irreverent music (including a score by Mark Mothersbaugh, founding member of the punk band Devo). Full of sure-footed performances, BOTTLE ROCKET is a charming meditation on friendship, love, and innocence, conveyed with great humor and refreshing goodwill.
Newcomer Owen Wilson, in a star-making performance, co-wrote the screenplay about three best friends who attempt to escape their suburban boredom through a life of crime. But these bickering, bumbling thieves are no match for the local 'godfather' (James Caan) who leads them into the biggest heist of their careers.
Wes Anderson first illustrated his lovingly detailed, slightly surreal cinematic vision (with co-writer Owen Wilson) in this visually witty and warm portrait of three young misfits. Best friends Anthony (Luke Wilson), Dignan (Owen Wilson), and Bob (Robert Musgrave) stage a wildly complex, mildly successful robbery of a small bookstore, then go “on the lam.” During their adventures, Anthony falls in love with a South American housekeeper, Inez (Lumi Cavazos), and they befriend local thief extraordinaire Mr. Henry (James Caan).
Bottle Rocket is a charming, hilarious, affectionate look at the folly of dreamers, shot against radiant southwestern backdrops, and the film that put Anderson and the Wilson brothers on the map. The film was shot on various locations in Dallas, Texas, including at St. Marks High School, where Owen Wilson was expelled in the tenth grade.
