A new, technologically-superior Soviet nuclear sub, the Typhoon-class Red October (equipped with a new silent propulsion system), is heading for the U.S. east coast under the command of Captain Marko Ramius (Connery). The American government thinks Ramius might be a madman and will launch his nuclear missiles at the United States. A lone CIA analyst (Baldwin ) has a different idea: he thinks Ramius is planning to defect, but he has only a few hours to find him and prove it, because the almost the entire Russian naval and air commands in the Atlantic ocean are trying to find him, too - with the mission to hunt down and destroy the Red October.

Who will find the Red October first? And in the middle of all this is Jack Ryan, who's personally trying to get to Ramius and help him defect. A race between NATO and the Soviet Union begins... the hunt is on!
