UPDATE: It now looks like it will be released after May 31st and therefore it will not be released on HD DVD. More when we have it!

Warner Bros. will release all "Dirty Harry" movies on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray this second quarter.

In a recent held press conference it was revealed that all five movies will be released in new special editions. A "Dirty Harry: Ultimate Collector's Edition" box will also be released on DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray.

Feel lucky punk?

I noticed that most of the older titles on BR have been grainy. It's got to be the way the film is transcoded into digital video. Most of the rips I have seen were mpeg2. I don't see that same breakdown in HD DVD as often. hmmm...

This is why I want studios to do two different transfers for every movie they make instead of taking choice away from the consumer: One waxy DNR'ed transfer without a spot of grain - soft as silk. The other transfer a sharp, high-bit rate "grainy" transfer that looks like the film from whence it came.

That way we both would be happy.

I hear ya Mike. The problem is that the more consumers think that way, the more studios will feel compelled to offer those kind of "silky-smooth" DNR'ed transfers, then EE them after to add a bit of fake "depth". Perhaps consumer education would help (as in the wide screen versus full screen DVD debate), but I find more and more people actually prefer the smooth look of a grain-free image, even if a certain amount of detail and depth is lost in the removal process. Oh well, at least a grain-free image is a heck of a lot easier to compress.

Seems like the HD DVD announcement was a mistake, here's what the Digital Bits as to say:

All five Dirty Harry films will also be available in Blu-ray disc (but not HD-DVD - this corrects an error in our original Tuesday post)
