(now available - released September 15)
Paramount Home Entertainment recently released the sci-fi thriller Deep Impact on Blu-ray (Sept 15), for a suggested retail price of $29.99.
Deep Impact is a 1998 sci-fi-drama disaster film released by Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks SKG in the United States on May 8, 1998. The plot describes the attempts to prepare for and destroy a comet, which is expected to collide with the Earth and cause a mass extinction.
Another "space impact" film, Armageddon (directed by Michael Bay), was released about two months after Deep Impact in the United States. Deep Impact was lauded by astronomers as being more scientifically accurate, and was better received by critics, but Armageddon fared better at the box office.
DEEP IMPACT:
When it is discovered that an enormous comet is on a collision course with Earth, a handful of Americans make different preparations for the end of the world. Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker, The Code) directs from a script by Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost) and Michael Tolkin (The Player).

Detailed Film Synopsis:
Oceans Rise. Cities Fall.
HOPE SURVIVES.
Heaven and Earth are about to collide.
Fourteen-year-old Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood) did not expect to make an earth-shattering discovery when he joined his high school astronomy club. He didn't expect to make any discoveries at all; he simply hoped that classmate Sarah Hotchner (Leelee Sobieski) would discover him. Yet a photograph he takes through his small telescope makes him co-discoverer of Comet Wolf-Beiderman... a comet that scientists determine is on a fatal collision course with the Earth.
MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner, while investigating a high-level scandal in Washington, stumbles upon the story that a comet is on a collision course with Earth. A year earlier, amateur teenage astronomer Leo Biederman discovered a new comet that is the one now certified to hit within the year. U.S. President Beck announces to the world that a spaceship called the Messiah will blast off in two months to plant nuclear bombs in the comet in hope of blowing it to bits. This plan fails, splitting the comet into two sections. The smaller will hit off the east coast creating a tital wave that will destroy New York and Washinton while the larger portion will land in Canada causing an ELE, or Extinction Level Event, complete with Earth-enshrouding clouds of dust that will wipe out all life. Declaring martial law, President Beck reveals that a network of caves is being built to accommodate 1 million citizens, most to be chosen by a national lottery.
