Sony has just announced that later today it will be possible to rent and download movies directly to your Playstation 3.

From day 1 they will have movies and more from Sony Pictures, Fox, MGM, Lions Gate, Warner Brothers, Disney, and more.

Consumers who rent a movie from the video delivery service have 14 days to watch the content. Once content playback is started, consumers have a full 24 hours to enjoy their rental. Pricing for rental movies at launch ranges from $2.99 to $5.99, and pricing for purchased movies ranges from $9.99 to $14.99.

It was also announced that they will increase the hardrive space on the $399 model to 80GB this fall from the 40GB it currently has.

SWEET! I have been waiting for this to see what it's like. Hopefully this service works for us in Canada as well.

Now if only I could watch 1080P movie trailers from Apples site through the PS3 without any problems...

To be honest I wanted to try this last night but then when I saw I will need to update my ps3 to the newest firmware I hesitated. I'm afraid of ps3 updates right now after that last one messed up some systems. I have a 60gb ps3 and now that backward compatibility is pretty much gone once the new ps3s come out this fall I want to take care of it. I have even read stories online of people who have tried to get their 60gb systems repaired only to be told by Sony that those motherboards aren't being made anymore so they are switching them out with the later ps3 motherboards (thus losing the emotion engine functionality). I think I will wait a few weeks to see if anyone has problems out of the newest firmware update.

Chemteam, exactly, when mine got bricked because of an update issue I was hoping that they would send me a 60 gig unit back. They are like gold and if you search online they are somtimes 3x more expensive than a regular 80 gig unit.

Tony I'm curious. Did the last firmware update (2.4) brick your system or was it an earlier update or another issue entirely?

Did anyone try this movie download thing on their PS3? Do you really need firmware version 2.41 for it to work? How was it?

Chemteam, it was an earlier update. The PS3 tried to install an incomplete download and bricked. It took 2 weeks to get a replacement unit back from SONY. Falcon, I'm currently using v2.41 with no problems.

I d/l Final Fantasy the spirits within last night. Always wanted the blu ray but this was half the price and I wanted to try out the download service. Its pretty good, decent speed, great quality. Note i can't compare it to the blu ray version.

I was already running the 2.41 update so I went directly to the store front and found the Video tab.

It was late last night that I tried to stream Final Fantasy but that's not going to happen. I have a cable modem and I'm not entirely sure how well my Linksys WRTG54 likes the PS3..not that I'm overly sure that that's the problem..I just think streaming HD isn't going to be an option..

With that said, I let it download last night so I'm excited to watch it this evening. I don't plan on purchasing any content via the download service, but it will sure beat a trip to the rental store.

Any of you guys tried streaming HD? I'm curious to note your connection types.

Are there any free movies or do you have to pay for all of them?

I download firmware 2.41 so I'll install it tonight. Looking forward to trying out this service over the weekend.
