Update:
Once again Microsoft has issued a statement denying these rumors. "As we have stated, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360," the company said to GamePro.com "Games are what drive consumers to purchase game consoles, and we remain focused on providing the largest library of blockbuster games available." they concluded.

Original post:
Yet another rumor says that a Blu-ray drive will soon become part of the XBOX 360 eco system.

This time it is the Economic Daily News (Chinese News paper) that claims, Asus' Pegatron Technology has secured a deal from Microsoft to assemble Xbox 360 systems with a built-in Blu-ray Disc (BD)-ROM drive. They also believe that these could ship as early as fall 2008.

Microsoft has on numerous occasions debunked previous Blu-ray rumors. So, if this one is any different is unknown.

Personally, I find it very unlikely to see a Blu-ray drive in the console itself. In gaming, as in many other things, price is the main factor when it comes to combating your competition. So, I see Microsoft slashing prices to continue the lead over Playstation 3 and to gain on the bestseller Wii not adding a new drive. A new hardware upgrade like a Blu-ray drive will not help them achieve this, only make their margins for profit lower. If Blu-ray movies pick-up and becomes the deal breaker (when buying a gaming console) they might consider making a add-on drive but it is something they will not do unless the market really demands it. Look at the tremendous success of the Wii which is mainly contributed to low price and inventive new game controls.

Just my two cents.

A false rumor. Microsoft doesn't plan to support Blu-Ray playback in Vista or Xbox, ever.

Why do you think that? I personally feel it is a Consortium issue. Sony feels like they are bigger than they consortium

...and Microsoft always tells the truth (heavy sarcasm).

They never admit anything until the day they launch something. An add on wouldn't hurt anyone. I see them building it in only if its one of the available choices just like the elite is available but not the standard box.

Sorry Bladerunner1, the PS3 is not better. I don't think it will ever be. There are too many variables in which the PS3 lacks to make it a great console. It is good, but when you look at the dynamics of what the Xbox 360 can do and has done, that leaves the engineers at Sony with much work to do. Sony PS3 claim to fame is the BR drive, but that is about it. The Cell chip, is impressive but only a fraction of it potential can be used. I can blabble all day long, but why bother. Go buy yourself a 360 for gaming and then tell me that the PS3 is better. It will never happen. I didn't buy a 360 for the HD DVD drive or movies, I bought it for gaming.

Anyways, do we really need another posting about NO Blu-Ray drive in a XBOX 360?

Doing Blu-Ray is like dealing with a terrorist to Microsoft. It's against their corporate policy thanks to one specific component of it, namely BD-Java.

It hurts Microsoft. Nor is Bill Gates stupid enough to pay $60 Blu-Ray royalty.

Microsoft actually spent a lot of its own money to build the HD-DVD player software because doing so helped its business interests of promoting its own technology.

This is not the same case with Blu-Ray, Microsoft's best interest is to kill Blu-Ray ASAP by whatever it means. Expect to see the next revision of Xbox with a fat hard drive to promote Xbox Live HD downloading. But no Blu-Ray playback in Microsoft console, ever.

Sourse of this Xbox Blu-Ray rumor is probably Sony. Spreading such false rumor deters consumers from buying Xbox 360 in anticipation of a new model. Of course Microsoft does it parts to issue official denials the next day, but it won't go away...

Good point Deadmeat. I hadn't thought of that. That would help Sony to slow xbox sales. Consumer ---> "I'm waiting for the Blu Ray version, then I'll buy one." Doesn't come then they buy a Playstation.
