Full press release:
LAS VEGAS, NV (January 6, 2008)- Panasonic Corporation of North America, the principal U.S. subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (NYSE:MC), today introduced the DMP-BD50, Panasonic´s latest Blu-ray disc player - the ultimate playback source for high definition 1080p content. Blu-ray media offers a wide range of functions that foster the transition to HD - including 1080p image quality, lossless Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™ and versatile Picture-in-Picture applications. The BD50 adds the new BD-Live function, which uses the internet to further enhance the consumer´s entertainment experience and employs VIERA Link,™ a technology that allows the consumer to operate VIERA Link equipped home theater components with a single remote.
BD-Live opens up a myriad of interactive possibilities for the consumer. In the future BD-Live will allow users to connect the DMP-BD50 to the internet to download such data as images and subtitles, and to join in multi-player interactive games that are linked to bonus movie content contained on Blu-ray discs.
For optimum image quality the DMP-BD50 features the PHL Reference Chroma processor and P4HD i/p conversion processor, which combine to create Uniphier®, a precise digital video processor that produces sharp, crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. Uniphier reflects the advance encoding and authoring technologies developed by Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory.
The true to the original source images are complimented by an exceptionally pure, accurate sound achieved through Audio Re-master and integrated decoders for the lossless Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats. Furthermore, the DMP-BD50 can be combined with a 7.1 channel amplifier and speakers for full 7.1 channel surround sound.
Networking is an essential product of the DMP-BD50. With an SD Memory Card slot for easily transferring images from an HD camcorder or digital still camera via an SD Memory card. The consumer simply inserts the SD card into the BD50 and then can view the images on a large screen HD flat panel television with AVCHD format video images or JPEG stills in full 1920 x 1080 resolution.
"Panasonic was the first to bring a Blu-ray player with Bonus View (Final Standard Profile 1.1) to market and now with the DMP-BD50 we are again leading the industry with the inclusion of BD-Live," said Gene Kelsey, Panasonic Vice President Entertainment Group. "The beauty of the Blu-ray player is that we can now see movies the way the film maker intended, in glorious HD video and audio. The consumer can now combine the new generation DMP-BD50 with a VIERA flat screen televison to create a true living in high definition experience."

Wow, and the first player on either format to offer DTS-HD MA decoding. Sweet video processing stuff too! I'm guessing $800 for this kind of hardware?

I knew about htis player for quite some time. I was hearing a spetember release though. Oh well, anyways this is the player that I want, but you're right Sky it will be Around $699 from what a friend at Pana told me. That is still quite steep, yet. I'm still shocked that Pana went with Uniphier though? They are good scalers but, I would have imagine that they might of tried to make a stab at Anchor Bay, considering Achor doesn't have a manufacture anymore. Well all is not lost for Toshiba there at least. I'm excited to see this player hit stores. Finally a 2.0 player, with a good scaler and analog outputs, now they just have to work out the pricing!!!

Are there any bluray movies with DTS HD MA audio tracks on them? If so how many?
It doesn't seem like a deal breaker to me. As long as it has Dolby TrueHD (which sounds pretty amazing) and DTS HD thats good enough for me as far as audio is concerned.

It's a profile 1.1 player (I know you don't really care about that), it will also be able to bitstream both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA to receivers capable of decoding them, and it also promises to have fast load times. Best of all it has an MSRP of $349.99 which means soon after it's release you may able to pick it up for around $300.

I thought this kind of stuff wasn't important? I thought people only wanted BD because of the PQ/AQ and just to watch the movie? I thought all that extra stuff like PIP and internet connection was no big deal? I thought the benefit of BD is it can hold more, but wait, I won't use the "more" anyway...

Falcon, I have two Blu rays that have dts HD/MA. Eragon and Kiss of the Dragon. As far as the pricing on the Panny BD50K the price will be higher than the $450 Panny BD30K price tag.

I wonder why they waste dts HD/MA on a disc like Kiss of the Dragon?? It's a great movie, but let's face it....how good is the audio gonna be from a 1970's Kung Fu movie???

Kiss of the Dragon is from 2001. Enter the Dragon was from the 70's.

Don't all Fox and New Line Titles use DTS HD master?

They most certainly do. Trust me when I tell you, DTS-HD MA's higher then Dolby TureHD's bitrate definitely pays off. Their soundtracks are just more dynamic than TrueHD's. I've seen at least 10 movies with each of those codecs, and I can attest to that being consistently the case.
