Sales figures for the Playstation 3 arrives and worldwide install base reach 13 million.
According to Sony's own figures close to 4.3 million have been sold in the US. The closest competitor the XBOX 360 just reached 10.1 million in the US alone and a world wide install base of 19 million.
After beating the XBOX 360 in January and February the Playstation 3 lost for the second month in row this April. The month saw 187,071 PS3's sold against 188,000 XBOX 360 consoles. It was believed by some that the PS3 would have sold better than the XBOX because of the Blu-ray victory and the close connection between the Grand Theft Auto brand and the console. The fourth installment of that game was released in April on both consoles - previously being a Playstation exclusive. However, the game was released only 5 days before April ended and May data could show higher console sales.
In the end both machines were beat by the non-HD and cheaper Wii console. The Wii sold 714,200 units in April and now has a world wide install base of around 25 million.
