Sony Corp. said Thursday that their goal of putting 11 million Playstation 3 in homes worldwide before April 1st will not happen.

The company cut its 12-month sales target for PS3 consoles to 9.5 million from 11 million previously. Competitors Microsoft(XBOX 360) and Nintendo(Wii) had in earlier statements said they were ahead of their goals of units sold worldwide.

Microsoft recently said that they has sold 17.7 million Xbox 360 units since its launch more than two years ago, including about 4.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2007. Nintendo recently raised its forecast and said it now expects to sell 18.5 million Wii consoles this business year, which ends March 31, compared with its October forecast of 17.5 million units.

On the positive side Sony returned to profit at its games division for the first time since 2005 and its net profit jumped 25% in its third fiscal quarter.

no real surprise here, fony constantly over estimate this console

i wonder how many people (to go off on a slight tangent) re-bought a ps2 when thier original one failed?
for all the claims of 120million (i think not entirely sure) sold world wide, how many were rebuys?

i never bought the ps2 after ps1, for me the xbox was what the ps2 should have been, but thats a different thread...

anyone suffer the "you have to buy another one" attitude on the above?

I don't think Sony has ever met any of it's sales targets for the PS3 but 9.5 million consoles sold in 12 months isn't bad either.

No rebuy here...but then again, the PS3 is my first dip into the franchise.

I recall not liking the original Playstation or its games when they hit the scene.

Remember, 9.5 million is just a target, not an actual figure. Stil no good exclusive for $ony though.

Sony said it sold 4.9 million PS3 machine during the latest quarter, adding to the cumulative 10.5 million machines sold since it went on sale late 2006.

Considering the PS3 was only released in America and Japan in late 2006, and only March in the rest of the world I'd say that isn't half bad.

That was a pretty lofty goal to start with.

Considering the number of people I know, then went out to pick one up for bluray playback only... I would think they would be doing better.

Think about it this way. How many families do you expect to buy a PS3 to play the family night movie in.

Sure Sony is ambitious.

They've outsold the pace at which the 360 sold already.
